Anytime I hear about this man, words from Ice Cube come to mind. "Ike and Tina, Marie and Donnie, Ashford & Simpson Clyde & Bonnie"
Let me be the first to admit, I came from the Ike Turner School of Asskicking. You saw the movie, you heard the stories. This dispicable man beat the shit out of his wife. The originator of the term for A-shirts being dubbed "wife beaters." But goddamned if he didnt teach us a thing or to on how to smack someone up for talkin out the side of their mouths. For this and this only do i salute him.
But in some cases, being an asshole can turn out some great music, IE R Kelly, Al Green (pre grits incident), Mike Jack, and good ole trigger happy James Brown. We'll keep Bobby and Whitney out of this discussion for now. They're on a whole nother level in terms of being dysfunctional.

And now from one extreme to another. Luther Vandross, whom we at smokingsection did a dedication to a few months ago if I'm not mistaken. Let's be real for a minute. This man was a diva above divas, but he did make some grown folks music, as my Co-D Gotty would so eloquently put it. So here's a quick update for those that miss his music.

Next up to bat, the incomporable Earth Wind & Fire. Decades long, decades strong. Here's their newest effort Illumination, keeping it true to form and too funky for these young cats that dont know shit about what real soul music is.

Bruce Ruffin. Yeah, rather unheard of to me as well, but dude penned a BUNCH of classic Jamaican/Reggae inspired joints and enjoyed a good amount of success in the late 60's, early 70's. Give it a spin and I think you'll find some gems in here, and who he's influenced musically in the years after his career was at its peak.

And now for a reader throwing in his two cents about one of the females in the game.
One of the most slept on releases of 2000. Flipmodes 1st and only female MC rises to the top of the genre with a disc that headz and radio should've loved. The rhymes are tight, the beats are hot and her delivery is straight on fire.
If you're one of the ones who claims female MC's dont do it for me, give this a listen and try saying that again.
Her long overdue 2nd album "Everything is a Story" has been sitting on the shelves for 3 years courtsey of J Records. She has since left the label due to 'artistic differences'. Some of those tracks have leaked, "Party and Bullshit '03", "Hot Tub" F/t Snoop Dog, "On the Move" f/t Mary J. Blige.
Rumored to now be signing with Aftermath under BustaRhymes. Married to Outsidaz Young Zee. 1st gained famed by winning the Lyricist Lounge competition while 8 months pregnant.
One of the greatest albums out in 2000.
