Buggin Out...

Every now and then I start a post w/no true direction.

Okay...damn near every rip I start out with no direction.

I have ideas and they just formulate and come together like Jello while I'm upping the music.

Today's post, this idea of it all coming together may or may not be the case.

But it's all relevant.

Once upon a time, this song was the Black frat step routine song, plus the one that was guaranteed to start a party. Wherever Chubb Rock is now, I appreciate that dude for making this track.

Chubb Rock - "Treat 'Em Right"

Personally, I liked this song & video better.

Chubb Rock - "Just the Two of Us"

You want to cause a riot in Cashville right now?

Play this hometown favorite featuring everybody's current favorite rapper & a TN underground king...

All-Star feat. Yo Gotti & Young Jeezy - "Grey Goose"

And sweet Jesus somebody find me Shaheed The Poster Boy.

Huh?

You don't remember this cat from Freestlye Friday's 106 & Park?

I'd forgotten about this man as well but someone mentioned him to me recently.

The refresher for those of you who forgot and a thank you to those that inspired me to even mention him.

Posta Boy - "Jurassic Harlem"

Can someone tell me why there's beef in the underground? MF Grimm dissin Doom?

MF Grimm - "You Can Hide Behind The Mask"

Ahh...

Rhymefest, Twista, Kanye - "Chi Town" (over Ja's "New York")

Need some jazz?

Stroll on over to "The Land Of C" for some of that goodie good with a mixture of old and new. Plus, he's got some other noteworthy stuff poppin off there.

Soulful...

Melodic....

Creative....

Fine exhibition in vocal range going from high highs to the lows...

Beautiful due to the interaction between Jill & the audience....hearing the audience start before her...then midsong, asking the fellas to sing during a call & response and the baritones and bass comes through right on time...

I loved the studio version of this song....I taught it to my daughter and she can hum & sing it bar for bar with me....

But at this point, I lust for this whole album due to this song...

Jill Scott - "Do You Remember (Live)"

It's all I've been rocking today.

EDIT...DJ Shad came thru in the clutch! After three days of steady searching...hell motherfuckin yeah!

Jill Scott - Experience: Jill Scott 826 (Live)

Part 1 Part 2

I am a fan of a minimal amount of television.

Normally, it's playing in the background, out of view, while I'm doing a million other things.

And unless The Wire is on, I'm not addicted to any particular show.

I am a fan of the usuals, ESPN & the local news...but TVLand & Nick @ Nite are the staples around here.

So to hear the D-Block boys use this joint, I've been singin along loudly to the chorus like Norm on a T.G.I.Friday and the round was on the house.

D-Block - "Take Everything"

DubCee gladly pointed out that Capone-N-Noreaga used the beat first though...

CNN - "Cheers"

Call the South simplistic, minimalistic beat-driven, ignorant music all you want.

But don't tell me this track isn't just pure 2006 version of "The Mack" and certified true to the heart spit.

Remember time and time again
us tryin to make it work
we kiss fuck & break up again
man we makin the shit worse
the relationship was solid
shit was sacred at first
I did my dirt
now you thinkin i'm just a fake and a flirt
i thought you said that hurtful shit you said
because you was mad at me
but slowly i realize you said cause you ain't happy
am i meant to grow old and alone just like my daddy?
a bullseye for bitches throwin they pussy at me
I respect us too much to stand to see you sad
i rather let you go & find the man you never had
arguments and i'm sorry
we ain't bother to say
just made it harder to remember why we bothered to stay
how's good our way when we fight everyday?
remember I used to be the nigga who would brighten your day
the nig who used to say
'I miss you. Wish I could've saw you today.'
and if i call you know all i gotta say is...

T.I. - "I Want You"

...and since someone asked for it, it gives me a reason to say this now...

I didn't want to seem like I'm all over T.I.'s jock and reppin his fan club. But, this dude has gotta be my most anticipated of "mainstream" artists right now. He's found a good groove...not too trying to hard, but not going easy on the tracks. Instead, he's back to spittin some real simple "Trap Muzik" type flows which is what I've been waiting for. This single has been gettin heavy burn on radio recently but I've had it & "I Want..." on repeat for a minute now and including those two on every cd I burn lol.

T.I. - "What You Know"

All in all, this post was for an update regarding the The Smoking Section "Pass The Smoke" Challenge for the free Rapidshare Premium Account.

Due to the underwhelming response lol...I want to extend the deadline for one more week to see if we get more contributions.

We're trying to make this inviting for people to share by giving away something in return. So, take a few minutes and contribute something.

Even if you "lose", we all gain because it's more music shared with every visitor to this neck of the woods.

"Death Is Certain..."

...Uncertainity.

That's for certain.

Now, none of us can predict what's going to happen next.

Otherwise, we'd be on some Madame Cleo shit & sittin in the Tropics sippin something lovely.

Somehow, Cassidy going to free in give or take a year, with time served added in?

A few months ago...I don't think anyone could've predicted that if they wanted to because son looked like he was gonna be spittin those gritty vocals, C-Murder/Shyne style telephone raps.

The Pittsburgh Steelers in the Super Bowl?

Nah, nobody was seein that except a chosen few Terrible Towel-wavin stalwarts who believed.

And while we knew for a while that the D was hosting football's ultimate event, who knew the last vestiges of Motown would be razed and removed?

Jay not choosing to respond to Cam?

Chances were 50-50 even bet on that one lol. (Psst...don't believe it just yet.)

Kanye West posin' as Jesus for Rolling Stone...wait a minute, he's been doing the "I'm Jesus"/sacraficial lamb thing for a minute so that's not news.

Ahh...ok, enough of that.

I just had to find a way to mention some news and link you to it all.

I did want to give you this because I've been rockin to it. My son RussianMafiosi put me up on this joint and it's appreciated. Courtesy of Underground Railroad, a nice radio show/interview with Lord Finesse. The Funky Man chops it up on the 1's & 2's briefly and then drops jewels on the current state of Hip-Hop's Mecca, NYC. Bouncing between decades, the musical selections displayed here are on point & Finesse's words are the icing making this one good to go.

Underground Railroad - WBAI-NYC Radio Show

Note to you - Give this radio/site a looksee, as they fuck with Mumia Abu-Jamal and have his take on New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin's 'Chocolate City Dreams & Vanilla Realities'

Next up, that dude Big Speech dropped off his latest offering of instrumental beats for me, you hungry DJ's & MC's to listen to. They were like a nice cognac...not too overpowering in taste, but good enough that you know you were fucked up once you listened to a few lol. He's doing his thing so give him a listen and to get more info hit his myspace page www.myspace.com/bigspeech or www.themovementonlline.net Enjoy!

Big Speech - Dreams for the Insomniac Instrumentals LP

While browsing and tracking back hits, I ran across White Barry and found a few jewels. Namely, I've been blasting Gnarls Barkley's (Danger Mouse & Cee-Lo Green) "Crazy" (Note - Please play this joint loud!)but even more I found some jazz.

On the eve of the federal election here in Canada, I bring you one of the most revered concerts in the country's short history. On May 15, 1953 Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Bud Powell, Charlie Mingus, and Max Roach performed at Massey Hall in Toronto. The performance, which has been called the greatest jazz concert ever, was recorded by Mingus and eventually released on Roach's record label. Oh, to be alive in 1953! Unfortunately, the concert's promoters failed to consider that a heavyweight championship between Rocky Marciano and Joe Walcott may draw away from the crowd size. In the end, Massey Hall was more than half empty... But at least it was all captured on tape!

This joint has been flowing on a nice volume for the majority of the day while Gnarls took care of my late nite's.

The Quintet - Jazz at Massey Hall (From May 15, 1953)

Last but not least...yes, I'm serious.

I do plan on giving this thing up pretty soon*. Maybe not totally but I will be cutting back my involvement considerably. No Too Short/Jay-z false retirement here.

In a short & concise reasoning statement...

1. I need more time to get back in the streets a little.

2. This shit is time consuming for real. I love you all & I love to share...but it's rough some days finding music, the inspiration to write about something, coding links, etc etc...all in one, it's QU hectic.

3. It's making me feel old because, admittedly, I'm not as in touch with the current pulse of hip-hop as I should be. Yeah, I can still pick a winner early and tell you what's hot. But I know there's more out there that I want somebody to take up the torch and speak about. (If you're out there, step up & contribute...hell, take up the baton!)

4. I'm writing a book.

Yeah...exactly what I said.

No details just yet but tenative titles that are being decided....

"Get Behind Me Satan"

"Things Of That Nature"

"Memoirs Of An Intelligent Hoodlum"

"Lily In The Valley"

"It's Better To Go To Hell On Your Own..."

I'm bout to self-publish, go that Jim Jones/Koch money route lol.

In stores, 2008. Fuck with your folks & cop that when you see it. Catch me on Oprah spittin the real, no James Frey.

Considering our humble origins, an average of 5K visitors/day for a week or two will = original mission accomplished and we're dumb close right about now.

The way I figure it, we started from the ground up. So to hit those numbers for a week straight is basically like average Wilt Chamberlin sexual statistics lol.

* If God lights my path & says "Gotty keep doing it", I must. But let's hope he uses some form of enlightenment that equals dollars signs & an even more enhanced form of joy that I already recieve from being a part of this thing of ours.

Salute!

"West Coastin'..."

The argument occurred to me the other day regarding which label had the strongest roster during it's prime.

Def Jam had/always has had some heat. But they always sorta had a pure mainstream, "safe" edge to them.

The Roc...cancel Jay & you have to take them out of the running for the top spot although they could operate in a middle of the pack, consistent playoff team type of deal.

Bad Boy...no sir, factor out Big and all you got is Puff dickin disgruntled artists for dough.

Cash Money or No Limit...in their primes, maybe.

My award for strongest roster...

Death Row Records

Snoop D-O-Double G (in his prime before all the Pee Wee football, chuuch and GGW)

Kurupt (take some No Doze and wake ya ass up)

Pac...nuff said

Nate Dogg on the hooks

Dre & Daz on the boards

Make no mistake about it because in their prime, they had the whole world's attention, straight up...not just the rap world, but literally, the whole US and abroad with the murder cases in the news, the beef, the music, flaunting the gang affiliations, etc etc.

Who minded it all?

Suge Knight

Say whatever you want about that man and I might agree with you.

But on a whole, business-wise, Suge set the shit off and made it happen.

Cam callin out Jay? 50 callin out everybody? You're least favorite rapper hating your favorite rapper?

Psssh...

With Suge's influence, intialized with a less than thirty second comment on The Source Awards, Suge had two fuckin coasts at war and his label officially made the West Coast relevant to the hip-hop world again!

Shit...Suge even made it where The Source Awards and most other big media musical events become Wrestlemania Roman numeral blah blah everytime they came up.

Don't get it twisted because I'm not saying that I agree with everything Suge has said or done. Never that.

But I also can seperate business from personal and respect what he created.

Shit, the man never put out an album, never appeared on an album, and has a label that hasn't made noise in years...and he's still eatin and recieving media coverage.

Don't think Suge and The Row had a worthy impact?

Peep this from the Reginald Denis interview that was posted a few weeks ago (read the whole thing if you haven't. It's wonderful).

"And speaking of Source Awards, here’s something that you might find interesting. Did you ever wonder why Suge called out Puffy during the 1995 broadcast? Well a couple of Source staffers were hanging out at the venue during the rehearsals when Biggie and later Suge happened to wander by. Biggie began to voice his displeasure about being on Bad Boy and was talking about possibly making a change. Suge told him that he would be happy to have him at Death Row and that they should talk about how they could make that happen. And that’s how the whole mess started.”

Reggie Denis is a journalist.

But, I don't think he's influenced by all the current politics of hip-hop.

So for him to make mention of that...it all makes you wonder what if fuckin BIG had went to The Row...history would've been drastically different.

So, it's with the West Coast, the label, the music and it's influences that we give you some Dogg Pound Gangsta shit.

I love Jay-z's music as much as the next man.

And I've made the statement that I think the Dips provide some of the most entertaining music, personas, and radio interview that hip-hop has had in a while.

Those are disclaimers before some of you get all in a frenzy.

I'm not picking sides or saying "oooh, _________ won!"

All I'm going to tell you is that for the past few days...Cam has put one word in my head that makes me giggle everytime I hear it.

"Chancletas"

Be mad all you want but I find the shit entertaining as fuck lol.

Last but not least...an offering of sorts to you.

To be more specific, The Smoking Section "Pass The Smoke" Challenge.

Props to Kim L aka Ms. F. Lupus for bringin this idea up and sponsoring it.

Simple.

Interested?

for more details, submission instructions and all that other jazz.

Whew...I'm tired. I'm tellin ya'll ahead of time...there's a high probability that once we start averaging 5K visitors per day (Current Average Per Day - 3,313) that I'll be giving this up. Passing the torch or allowing it to drift into cyberspace history...I dunno. I hope someone will take it up. If not...well lol. I'm sincerely hoping somebody takes up the task though.

Oh yeah...we run this blogging shit!

"Scooby Snack Jurassic Plastic Gas Booby Trap!"

Retro coming back in with one of a many part series on one of the largest hip hop groups to ever exist. That's right, Wu-Tang Clan. First the members, then the collective.

Honestly, is anyone really fuckin with my dude Ghostface? I realize that each individual in the group has their own niche of fans, but Ghostface is really killing shit out there. Ghost and Meth have both been keeping the Wu name in circulation while the other members handle theirs on the low. But in terms of consistency, the title goes to Ghost-deni without a doubt.

Ironman (co-starring his PNC Raekwon), Supreme Clientele, Bulletproof Wallets, The Pretty Toney Album... all hits with the hardcore Wu fans. And all among the most solid efforts put out by the Wu. One look at this cat and you know, he's the real deal.

The custom made bathrobe, the eagle wrist piece, the bigass gold plate medallion, 4 finger ring, and some wallys. Duke is just wild. But that's his style, and it's reflected in his oratories on the mic. High pitched, off kilter, and at times completely random, you come to expect anything from Toney. Case in point, the title of this post.

But there's more to it than that. What he does, he does well. As Gotty™ would say, he keeps it 100. His credibility mirrors what he's about. Son was wanted for a multitude of crimes, hence the mask and the name. And from punching Ma$e in his pretty boy grill to stickin it to 50 Cent to smoking dust all day, don't noone in the 5 Boroughs really want it with him.

Only person wilder in the Wu was Osiris aka Dirt McGirt aka Old Dirty Bastard aka Big Baby Jesus. But to his credit, Ghost didnt stray far from his original blueprint to success. Spit the way he wanted, acted the way he wanted, wore what he wanted, said what he wanted. Regardless of the circumstances.

Toney might not have that mass appeal that everyone loves, but he's definitely real enough to showcase his wide range of emotions that he puts into songs. Some key songs come to mind when i mention this. "I Can't Sleep," "All That I Got Is You," "Never Be The Same," and "Child's Play," were all odes to what real people in the hood go through, but rarely express.

Ironman is definitely the right title for this dude. Now excuse me while I throw on a Versace bathrobe and Gucci shades to smoke a loosey outside.

I got several requests to up last night's episode of The Boondocks.

I can't really say much.

I'm a Aaron McGruder fan and I have every book he's put out (do the same).

Whatever needs to be said about MLK as well as Black folks, he put it on the table.

I think it suprises alot of people when his characters say some of the things he says. But if you've followed the comic, you know these are views he's espoused since it's inception.

McGruder is one of the more powerful voices America has right now. Not just Black people. All of America.

(Can anybody get a video clip of him speaking? I had it a few years ago and haven't seen it since.)

I'll let you all watch the episode and discuss.

The Boondocks, January 15, 2006 - "Return Of The King" Change to .avi

Backup Link

Video thanks to NquestII

I guess it's all ironic because I've been unconsciouly listening to Goodie Mob's Soul Food all day and had these two tracks on repeat without realizing the full significance of the day & the relationship these songs share with the same sentiments shared in episode.

Goodie Mob - "Fighting" & "The Day After"

"So What's The Difference..."

"...between rap and hip hop? It's simple. It's like sayin' you love somebody and bein' in love with somebody. Rap is only a word."

Brown Sugar

Trying to be creative, and through the course of various convos & emails, the idea hit me...

"Tell'em about the first cuts you remember."

Real easy.

The what?

Doug E. Fresh - "The Show"

The where & when?

Christmas @ my paternal grandparents' house, roughly 1980 something.

The why?

Because we literally played the shit out of it back to back to back to...well you get the point, in typical little kid fashion. See, my grandad owned a lil juke joint & my uncle DJ'ed. So, he would always make us kids tapes of the latest songs. And hearing this joint blare from the opening horns & announcer-style intro...as kids, we were hooked. Now, of course, we all know about Slick Rick's wordplay and story telling abilities. But back then, it was all about his ability to be funny...and Dougie's ability to beatbox like nobody's business.

Eric B. & Rakim - "My Melody"

I remember riding bikes with a few friends and we were headed to a new park. And these dudes set up some of those huge Peavey speakers with Paid In Full to be heard from two streets away. It was some old Pied Piper shit because all you had to do was follow The God MC's voice and you were there. But, when we got there, for me it was like time & everything else froze or zoned itself out...with the combination of Rakim's firm voice and Eric B's scratches, no other sounds or sights even registered really. I recollect standing there listening just in awe...

"Just when you think you know hip hop it surprises you and reminds you why you fell in love with it in the first place."

And it's funny how things connect, because as I was coming up with thoughts and memories, Buxone125 sent me this link that was relevant to today's post. I remember in late 80's, my cousin Big David from Chi came down to the country to visit. On that Friday when they came, he kept buggin the shit out of my Uncle Buddy to take him to the tape store to cop some goddamn tape. My dude got that tape and didn't share it with nobody...son put on his Walkman and was straight noddin to the beat on our grandma's living room couch for like four or five hours straight. Yo! MTV Raps was still in it's infancy and I went home that night to catch the second or third episode...and I recognized the group and the video they were premering immediately....it was what Dave had been rockin to all that day.

What was it?

"So you're a philosopher?"

"Yes..."

BDP - "My Philosophy"

And respect due to Buxonefor shootin in this clip.

Last episode of YO! MTV Raps Freestyle (Video)

There's always more...trading my MC Shan tape for the school janitor's, Scottie Mac, Whodini tape in second grade...dubbing the first Fat Boys tape...hearing "Son Of Byford" and my sister and I creating our own version...listening to Yo! Bumrush The Show for the first time after church one Sunday...when N.W.A. & Eazy-E were all they were playing at the first "real" parties we went to...all of it has made me hip-hop for life no matter how I grow, change or my life progresses.

So I asked Dally to hit me off with some true old-school, early, rollerskating on Saturday's, the park on Sunday's type classics. As usual, he never fails. So check out the Stray Shots & enjoy.

Random Old School Shot of Fat Joe & Lord Finesse

We alternate between being a "site" and reporting to a "blog" espousing our personal thoughts & beliefs.

This rip, we're gonna do a mix sorta like that Neopalitan ice cream.

"The greatest MC of all-time died on March 9th..."

Remember when Canibus said that?

Well, it seems another rapper is set to die on the exact same date.

Rapper Cool C's Execution Warrant Signed by PA Governor Ed Rendell

I don't know if I'm going soft or what but something about the death penalty as an option for punishing criminals has become less & less appealing to me over the past two years. I can still remember seeing money on Rap City back in the day with Steady B, and then reading the news years later in Rap Pages that the duo was robbing banks...but I never thought I'd read this about C.

A glamorous life it is...

Next up, speaking of behalf of myself and myself only, Wayne has pretty much lost the last ounce of respect I had for him. Yeah, he's lyrical when he wants to be and can do damage at times. But the whole "greatest rapper alive" schtick...I ain't bitin. But son lost me when rocked the tatted tear & the red rag. Let me see, if my memory serves me correct, he came on the scene at age 15, give or take. When did he have time to earn that tear? Was he gangbanging at 8?

But to hear him diss diss Juvie And B.G....and Mannie Fresh in his latest interview , plus other wreckless talk I've read on his thoughts on Katrina in Ozone (1 2 3)...I'm not feeling dude at all. Add to the facts the he does denies claiming Blood while rockin a red rag (a major disrespect to your set & frowned upon in gang culture, punishable with death or a severe beatdown)...sorry but Weezie F.'s street cred is in strong question right about now. Entertainment is entertainment but real is real.

I'll proclaim this for the world.

I sang along to alot of Ja's tunes when he was R&B crooning a while back.

You did too.

If you didn't, you either lived under a rock or you're living a falsehood.

With the way they flooded the radio, you had to know/like/be aware of at least one track.

So I give Murder Inc. their just due.

Apparently, some within the industry don't.

In this interview, Irv Gotti speaks some real truths about Rule No. 4080, fake friendships & fortitude. Like or dislike the music they created, but still give credit to them and Irv for having a stranglehold on the media for a minute. And Irv makes the point (which was also backed up in Kevin Liles book) that he'll be back stronger than before because hip-hop is in his blood. I, for one, can respect that.

Last but not least...

Marion Barry is still on that shit.

Let's get a few things straight.

I'll speak on behalf of Black folk here.

Black people still love OJ.

They still love Marion Barry.

They still love Tookie Williams & Larry Hoover.

They still love/hate Kobe (point spread is -2).

They still love Mike Tyson, Mike Jackson and any other Black person accused of some major wrong.

Ok, so maybe I'm just speaking for me.

Barry is wrong.

But if DC residents still love him, it matters not to me. It's their city & if they feel better about his time spent as leader of that city, so be it. And by all accounts I've read and heard personally, D.C.'ers still love the man strongly and are grateful for what he did for the city.

I'll pray for the brother in hopes that he eventually wins his battle with his personal demons and addiction.

For all of the above mentioned news, I dedicate this song.

Poor Righteous Teachers - "Miss Ghetto"

Please divorce yourselves from Ms. Ghetto ("..Ms. Ghetto you'se a slut so I'm divorcing you bitch!") so we as a hip-hop nation, a Black culture, and a country can rise up.

Salute!
