"The Weight Of This Sad Time We Must Obey..."

Speak what we feel, not what we ought to say.
The oldest hath borne the most; we that are young
Shall never see so much, nor live so long.

"King Lear" Shakespeare

At times, current generations are inured to the idea of death.

A rapper dies, everybody shouts them out in songs, bites their lines or finds some scrap vocals and creates a "new" song under the premise that they're keeping the slain's memory alive.

When common folk die, folk are quick to put'em on a R.I.P. t-shirt with some cliche saying.

But when you stop to think about it, it reminds of your own mortality.

A few years ago, I had a discussion with my mom about it all.

She wondered why I lived in a semi-paranoid state with a numerous amount of firearms, extra locks and bars on the door, always feeling pressed. She wondered, why if I had so many positive things going on around me, I still chose to live so wreckless.

I had to go ahead & breakdown to confirm for her what she already knew & had heard but of course didn't want to believe.

Momma I always been puttin in work on these aggins & who knows if or when it's gonna come back to bite me in the ass or if God's gonna forgive me.

She cried.

To tell the truth, I prolly cried that day too.

Time has passed and I don't live half as wreckless.

At the same time, I know just because I took myself out the game that the game didn't stop. The game doesn't change, just the players.

So for now, I live & enjoy each day as much as I possibly can knowing that when the time comes, I did it as best I could.

And when the time comes, if I get to the pearly gates, I think whoever's holdin the books will know that I did what I had to do, what I wanted to do & what I thought was best while I was on earth.

Yeah...we lived savagely.

We was in this world...but tried our best not to be of it.

God Bless The Dead

Playa Fly - "Nobody Needs Nobody"

"P-I-MP-OLOGY...."

I'm tellin you shit's about to change around here.

We're about to put into effect some ill shit.

But right now, that's snatchin up all our time so I been reaching out to others to help with the writing and such so you'll still have ample & entertaining reading material.

This right here...this is one of my aces, my muse, my Heidi Fleiss.

1. If you need anything *cough* quality bootleg movies*cough* get at one of us (fuckin go thru me because I like to skim off the top lol). Shorty took care of me when I was in need of Season Three of The Wire (click the link to see the screenshots...A-1 product I tell ya).

2. If you need that Brazillian booty-bang, The Slut Next Door, six big motherfuckers gettin it in type action, get at shorty...but tell her we sent you because again, we believe in gratiuity & graft.

3. "We in streeetsss/I got the weeeeddddd/I got couple ki'ssss/You wanna eat? Fuck with meeee/Uh...you don't wanna see me pissed off/Fuck'er til my dick soft/nigga this is Rick Ross..."

This track is wild like lions eating kids, full-blown AIDS status sick...I can see the Chevy-riders & spiderweb boys on all sides of the city doin' it big with this track rattling the trunk...I been ridin with the windows down, yellin all day with this shit lol.

Rick Ross - "Bitches & Bizness

So while I keep working on the next shit...with no further adieu...

I present to you, CrazyBaby's "Killa Season" Movie Review...

Don't expect a masterpiece because you'll only be let down. I enjoy my street flicks like anyone else but I dont feel as if this movie really had a purpose but it was still entertaining & funny. The movie opens up with Flea (Camron) & them shooting dice. Someone tested Flea's gangsta and he retaliated by hitting dude with a Sizzurp bottle (plenty of product placement up & thru this movie) and pissing on him while saying, "no homo no homo" repeatedly. If that wasnt said, the scene wouldve been so ubberly gay but it was hilarious.

Throughout the bad editing, visual & sound effects, they managed to have me cracking up again at Flea's grandfather's funeral. This nigga was trying to get this woman's number while another dude, who obviously has no shame, was trying to bag this old lady up. Funniest scene in the whole movie. The same dude tried to sell Flea his kidney for $12,500. Pure comedy.

Killa Season
is filled with a little bit of everything. Guns, plenty of weed, crack, heroin, crackheads, police officers, strippers, and cars. And for the ladies, a dash of thug-love in the form of Camron, in the bathroom, suddenly wrapping a scene up by plowing a hard-ass-gel-on-the-side-with-a-long-horsetail-ponytail chickenhead. Chea chea chea!!!

I have no words for the ending but don't be surprised if there's a Killa Season 2

Oh and if you're overly sensitive
, look out for the scene were two Dominican bitches squat down and shit out packs of heroin and liquidy poo. I could've done without that part. Seriously.

"All For One..."

Sometimes I think these dudes' contribution to hip-hop has been forgotten & lacks recognition.

(Did I see Lord J on The Sopranos a few weeks ago or was I trippin?)

When it first dropped, I wasn't checkin for it because this was during the very beginnings of hip-hop's West Coast gangsta movement.

But my man Cookiehead kept tellin me to listen to it & would play the shit daily.

Once I put it in the Walkman, it would never leave and I was officially hooked.

The mix of styles here was ecletic with Grand Puba usually outshining all but perfectly offset with Sadat's deep-voiced smooth flow & Jamar's gruff sound.

Stylistically, these dudes, especially Puba, brought namedropping clothing labels to the game & pretty much cemented the hip-hop's loyalty to select brands, Hilfiger & Polo to be exact.

Before Wu, they brought 5% Godspeak to the masses in a digestable, interesting form. I remember once I began studying under the Gods & Earths this album straight became the soundtrack & daily inspirational music like church folk love gospel.

And straight up...with their pro-Blackness, these dudes made you want to pick up a fuckin book, which is a nonexistant contribution by today's artists for the most part.

Times change though...Puba seems to have bowed out gracefully, Lord Jamar has been on the small screen & behind the scenes and Sadat...well Sadat has still be wild cowboying, pulling pistols and such.

But this album is a solid classic without a doubt.

Why?...

1. Because I like to point and laugh at radio like "You're just getting ready to play that? We been up on that shit!"

2. I like to hear what to expect to be inundated in the clubs & radio over the next few months.

3. I just enjoy hearing them to see which label's payola campaign is the strongest & for which artists.

Nah, seriously, I enjoy seeing the list & hearing what the industry thinks is next, which sometimes greatly differs from the rest of us.

An interesting read here, Blender's "50 Worst Things To Happen To Music" if for nothing more than the fact that Suge ranked so high as a villian even outside of hip-hop.

5 Reasons Why Hip-Hop's Bluto Should Be on Permanent House Arrest...

1. For fanning the East-West rivalry flames at the '95 Source Awards with the classic words "If you don't want the owner of your label (translation: Puffy) all up in your videos, come to Death Row …"

2. For stealing the shine from legitimate artists
by getting shot at Kanye's VMAs after-party in Miami. (Note - LOL @ blaming the man for gettin shot!)

3. For allegedly hanging Vanilla Ice upside down from a hotel window, causing the rapper to lose control of his bodily functions (See Big Red from 'The Five Heartbeats.')

4. For signing vulnerable rappers to Death Row for publicity and then never releasing their albums, e.g. Petey Pablo, the late Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes, MC Hammer, etc.

5. For causing the embarrassing melee at 2004's VIBE Awards that tarnished hip-hop's already damaged rep. Rumor has it that Suge paid a man $5,000 to punch Dr. Dre as the producer was accepting his lifetime achievement award. In turn, G-Unit's Young Buck allegedly stabbed the man with, of all things, a fork.

Fiend feat. David Banner - "If I Had A Choice"

I Thought Jordans & A Gold Chain Was Livin It Up...

Retro checking in, posting in the section for our loyal readers. With warm weather approaching, here's some topics and insight for you folks trying to do it big over summer. Keep in mind that The Smoking Section in no way shape or form supports your fashion faux paus as a result of this post, but we in turn take all the credit should you become fresh to death.

If You Don't Know This Song, You've Been Living Under A Rock Since 99.

Jewelry:
As was told to me, kings were buried w/jewels to signify their importance. With that said, everyone likes a little jewelry here and there. Keep the shit on the simpler side, and for neckwear, keep it to one piece. Grills are doable considering your company, and so are chunky ass bracelets/earrings. However, when you're on that grown man shit, opt for a nice timepiece. And not those bootleg joints either. Ice free or not, a fresh timepiece can set you apart from the rest. Multiple chains are for the stars that are well known. But you can set shit off righteous with a standard non-hollowed out jesus piece. It's ultimate hip hop status symbol. Biggie set the whole craze off, as I recall. A fat cuban link jumpoff with the iced dome.

If you're looking into customized pieces, cool. Find a jeweler that can make a good mold for you at market price, but dont make the piece so thin to where it looks like a sheet of goddamn aluminum.

Accessories:
More and more, as hip hoppers are moving up the food chain, they realize that just jewelry don't make you a man about town. Sometimes less is more, and attention to detail is essential. Sidekicks started a craze of electronic accessories as well, although they're a tad played now. Opt for a T-Mobile MDA, or a Treo 700 for a worthy equivalent.

Big Tymers - Still Fly

Headwear is gonna come in handy for them hot ass days. Fitted hats are a personal favorite of mine, but don't be afraid to dabble in a Kangol here and there, or the classic Polo khaki cap. Hell, even those vented tropic style hats are ill.

Sunglasses are in for the season, and I dont think I need to reiterate that those 5 dollar aviators ain't cuttin it. I'm sure all of you know, but look into Gucci, Marc Jacobs, Versace, Prada, D&G, Dior, and all similar brands for some flair to your wardrobe. Ray Ban aviators aren't a bad choice for you ballers on budgets like myself either. Just check the wholesaler district in your major cities for deals on these, because sellers get a HUGE discount getting shit wholesale from Safilo. Warehouse sellers in LA usually give you a good deal because of their lack of overhead and the need to have a high turnover rate for everything they got in stock.

Jay-z - Poppin Tags

Kicks/Clothes:
As you can tell from the picture, I'm a fan of the vintage/retro stuff. But there's one universal rule to remember: there IS such thing as matching too much. Instead of wearing that oversize Rocawear polos, just get out there, go a size smaller, and wear some Ralph Lauren. A little Ralph never hurt anyone, for you teenaged readers. Respect to Thirstin Howl III and the OG Lo Lifes while I'm at it. If you plan to go with a European company for clothing (i.e. Fred Perry) just remember that it's closer to a custom fit, so go a size up from what you would regularly wear(and it's not xxxxxxxxl).

A little color is a good thing, but don't OD like my mans Killa Cam did with the pink a few years ago.

Lexicon - Nikehead

Looking for a nice white shoe? Always respect the Nike and Air Forces, but shelltoes, and Stan Smiths are affordable alternatives. Bape has had it's time in the limelight, so don't overdo it with their overpriced shoes and hoodies. I know I'll catch heat for that, but fuckit.

Cop some suede loafers while you're at it. Gotty™ has been harping on me about this, and I begrudgingly must agree that loafers are good for those "not so formal" but "not so casual" occasions. Still not convinced? Go for those chestnut/chocolate/wheat Wallabees. Damn those shoes are comfortable and pretty much go with most attire that isnt too sporty.

In the mean time, check this nice little article regarding the Lo Lifes .

"I Fouuwwwwwwwoouunnnnddddd...."

Yeah...that song has been straight stuck in my head.

It's understood that I been fan of Keyshia since hearing her early on mixtapes.

The album...feelin it.

But once this song hit radio, I was confounded lol...

Hearing her blow on the track is eargasmic...until you reach the chorus.

That's where confusion sets in.

It's similar to sometimes when you hear someone sing in church & you don't know whether they can sing or if you're just enjoying it because they're praising the Lord lol. In the latter case, you get outside & you tell somebody jokingly, "bless her heart, the child tried & she was singin for Jesus".

Whoever cleared this chorus to be on the album, I hate and love you at the same time.

It took many many months and hundreds of repeat listens for me to come to the decision that I like, regardless of how stressed out the chorus sounds. I've accepted it.

Keyshia Cole - "Love"

"Jose Canseco just sniiitchin' because he fieennhheesssseeedhhh"

After giving this mixtape a thorough listen, I was pleasantly suprised.

Of course, "Hustlin" was well accepted off top, but "Chevy Ridin High"" didn't initally move me.

But now that I hear it in the context with the rest of his body of work it fits and I'm with it as well.

This collection is not overwhelming but instead very promising, as it's got a few standouts.

To compare his flow, I might throw him in the vein as Jeezy's charismatic voice, his own distinct lyrical ability that's accentuated with his history lending proof that he's in tune with the content he's speaking on.

Mentionables...

"Before The Limelight"
"Bitches & Bizness"
"Chevy Ridin High"
"Thug Thizzle"
"Down & Out"

Give it a listen for sure.

I am not a fan of Jamie Foxx musically.

I can't help it.

Sometimes when he sings, I hear "acting" in his voice...I picture characters from In Living Color...I picture Ray...but I don't picture Jamie.

I am learning to listen to him though & my man Triple E helped tremendously by sending me this joint.

Irony

Life has a way of provoking the most bizarre occurences.

Just Saturday, I was passin Nquest some tracks for his Ipod and recommended one particular song to him. Damn near forcefed it to him on some "get this one for sure" type shit.

What track?

Proof feat. Chino XL - "Our Time"

Now the title seems so gloomily ironic.

God bless the dead.

Down And Out

We all been there before. Hard times do not discrimate against race, creed, religion, sexual preference, or geographical location. We've all been victims of it. Your boy Retro is no exception.

Rock bottom. When you dont think the shit couldn't get any worse, but it does. And how. The worries follow you into your dreams, idle moments, hell, even when you're sitting on the shitter. Makes you think that maybe they'll even follow you into the next life.

Girl problems, drug problems, family problems, legal problems, problems. Jay was wrong, it's definitely more than 99.

Take a puff on that Newport. When that last drag fades near the filter, it's just a temporary shelter from what you've been forced to deal with. A slight reprieve, but still just a little slice of piece of mind.

Liquor helps, regardless of what people say. Stuck in your own world, for better or for worse, but still far away from the shit that bothers you. Until you pass out intoxicated and alone. By that time it's already too late. You're already past the point of no return, and past the point of being brought back to who you once were. You decide that living like this is better than dealing with it the way you should. Sometimes, you wake up and think "Damn, I'm still here," half hoping you wouldn't wake up because of the shit you gotta put up with. Is this all there is to life? Maybe.

Nas - Drunk By Myself

I can't say there's a guarantee that things get better from here. All I can do is keep on pushing back. Until I'm too tired to go on, or until I give in to the bottle and the drugs. With everyday of partying and bullshit, the light at the end of the tunnel started to fade. There's still an ounce of hope. But when that hope fades, there's nothing left to life.

Shoutout to shorty who held me down when I really needed it. I was a piece of shit when you helped me out. I still am. But you're my journal, even though we ain't talk about that shit for a while. And I don't know if you'll ever know how grateful I am, but thank you.

This post was brought to you by the good folks at The Smoking Section. Because when you think you're alone, you're not. Other people feel the same shit you do. Stay on that hustle, leave your mark, and know that we can relate.

Outty 5000,

Retro

UPDATE:

Not even a day after I posted this, Hip Hop has lost another one of its soldiers. RIP Proof, took one in the dome early Tuesday morning in the D. Our hearts are with his family and loved ones. "Take A Look At Me Now..."

Say what you will, but when Ja was on, he did his thing with great success.

I was never a real fan of what he did for the "rap crooner" genre but I swear nobody can honestly admit to having not actually sung along to one of his many many radio hits, either mockingly or earnestly.

H-Town's gonna hate me...and I know this is damn near blasphemy to some of you, but go back with me...

Ja Rule - "Down Ass Bitch" feat. Charli Baltimore

Thuggery aside, Goapele's , "Crushed Out" and "Fly Away" have been in absolute constant rotation all weekend...literally. So, to catch this release floating around was a cool find & seems worthy of passing along. While I can't vouch for this one yet because I haven't given it a thorough listen, I know for a fact that Change It All (2005) is worth any time spent listening so I'm expecting to find a few gems on this one.

Goapele - Even Closer (2002)

Seven reasons why Rocafella should not have broken up....

1. "For The Fam"
2. "What We Do"
3. "1-900-Hustla"
4. "Do It Again"
5. "Celebration"

6. "Flipside"

...And because we never got enough Peedi.

7. "Gotta Have It"

Salute!

"Five Mics In The Source..."

...ain't holdin' my fuckin' breath..."

Marshall Mathers

It's pretty much understood that the major hip-hop publications ratings system is "off" to say the least.

In between their petty beefs and allegiances, the credibility of XXS and The Sauce has been sacraficed.

But in their prime, both magazines, especially The Sauce, literally defined for listeners what albums were "classic" and which were near misses. Without a doubt, they helped to define what a generation of buyers were listening to.

When you think about it, the term "classic" was inadvertantly created and has been one of the more debatable topics in hip-hop, besides who won the battle between Jay & Nas (it was Nas, if you were wondering).

Nevertheless, we present to you all of the albums, currently, that have recieved the notorious five mics in The Sauce.

By this count, there's fourty-three.

Some are worthy of praise...

Some appeared as "makeups" for previous misses when an artist released a notable album but it failed to garner initial critical praise...

Some are questionable at best...

We were going to put the list up for you to see...but I figure we'll leave it as a suprise for you, test your hip-hop history of sorts to remember all fourty-three before looking. I know I honestly forgot some of these even got mentioned much less got the praise they did.

Either way, it should be an enjoyable compilation of albums for you to sample.

Every Album To Recieve 5 Mics In The Source

Props to DENEIRE for his efforts on this one.

The Only Movement Moving...

Ghost Unit Mixtape

Retro back like I never left. In recent Hip Hop history, it seems like every major rapper likes to bring in their collective crews. Problem is, the squad is weak as FUCK. The Lunatics, D-12, Flipmode Squad (sans Digga, she's kind of nice), and a slew of others. They seem to ride the coattails and at least still strike gold, regardless of talent or lack thereof. Fame by association is a powerful thing indeed.

One of the groups I have left it is of course, G-Unit. Fif was rather successful at promoting a lackluster group. Admit it you Unit fans, Banks monotonous flow is decent with the punchlines but not much else. Yayo is just hot garbage. Buck is nice, but Spider Loc? Has-beens Ma$e and a post-verbal whippin Mobb Deep? Let's not even mention MOP, who are a solid collective but been dropped from more labels more than I've had hot meals. I don't think I need to continue. Although it'd still be interesting to see if the before mentioned characters release good music.

On the flipside, us at Smoking Section must bigup a rap crew on the rise. The Black Wallstreet . That's right, hate all you want, but Game's label and artists are at least decent.

Criticism as of late for Game is that he's flip flopped, chancleta style. And that he has. But something people fail to understand, is that it's damn near impossible to balance the street life with a good business sense. In the end, either the streets swallow you whole, or you're viewed as a "sell out." Lose lose situation. Thus far, Game's done a pretty good job. Anyone who says he's not good in the hood must be out their mind. I've heard about and seen Game rolling with BWS through ANY hood with not so much as a scratch on him. Watts, Compton, Long Beach, South Central, East Los, wherever, he's been around and he's respected.

Hell my folks seen him in the Wood packing that thing and eating a goddamn chicken sandwhich on the block. How many stars can you say can do that anywhere in or around their hoods and not worry about nothing? Very few.

Game - You Know What It Is Volume 3

With that said, Game's garnered national support and like any good friend, is bringing his folks onto the scene. And he's got a pretty good roster. Eastwood, Ya Boy, Chuck B-More, Nu Jerzey Devil, DJ Skee, and Rockstar (almost). He's dropped solo mixtapes featuring a shitload of remixes, and doesn't show any signs of stopping. Now if he'd just work on his goddamn album!

Pistol Play....

Hip-hop and guns go together just as much as the deejay & the rapper.

I can still remember the weeks and days after Scott LaRock got popped.

There's nothing wrong with guns.

That is as long as they're used & treated properly.

I'm from the South and guns are a way of life.

I carry a firearm absolutely everywhere I go and keep them posted around the house (Note to would-be robbers).

My daddy, both grandaddies, my uncles...hell my momma, my sister, & both grandmommas, all own and/or actively carry.

Plus I'm from the real country where everybody has some sort of firearm at their disposal and I'm talking white boys & reverands w/the gun racks in their trucks and like my grandparents who, ever since i was knee high to a grasshopper, had a gun rack in the den.

Alot of people talk it but to me it's sort of a way of life; not neccessarily the "bustin shots" aspect but the being around & being familiar with firearms. To me, there was never a fear associated with them becuase they weren't treated as something negative or positive...they just were, as in a part of life.

I don't consider myself to be all that knowledgable or any more than the next man at least.

I do however consider myself an advocate of guns & gun safety.

You want to carry a gun?

I'd suggest first going to your dad, an uncle someone older and asking advice or help. If that fails or isn't an option, go to a local gun range and sign up for a Saturday class.

Next, learn your state's laws. Go here

Also, consider getting a permit to carry a firearm.

I should practice what I preach because I've caught several gun charges lol.

But I'm from the South where gun laws are lax and lawyers are in cohoots with the judges.

Fines paid, cases dismissed.

Once you get a gun, go to the firing range, learn how to clean & care for it.

It might save your life.

Here's some guntalk for your ears since such a firearm friendly atomosphere has been created here today.

Gangstarr - "Tonz O' Gunz"

Guru got popped with a gun way back...original ruffneck rude bwoi.

Jay-z - "Guns & Roses" feat. Lenny Kravitz

Free Jason Williams' dumb ass....nah on second thought.

Lupe Fiasco - "Heat Under The Babyseat"

A brief description of all types of gun toters and social commentary over a heavy 80's/rock influenced beat.

M.O.P. - "Blue Steel"

Now what would a post about guns be without the Mash Out crew?

Apparently, things worked out well today.

I'm beat from the weekend plus I plan to watch the game tonite.

And all the internetts want is this joint...

Even swap ain't no swindle.

Can I please tell you that ATL was a fairly entertaining flick?

I can't front...I wasn't expecting shit but another rapper movie. But, it was better than I expected. Based loosely off the life of Dallas Austin, it pulled $12.5 mil so some other folks must've checked for it as well. Alot of good laughs, somewhat predictable...T.I. wasn't so give credit for him playing a role we didn't expect...the harder, older version of Roll Bounce lol.

Two things you should know before going in...

1.
I don't know about you all elswhere but, roller skating is a southern thang patna. From 18 to 40, Sunday nights still be poppin at the skating rink.

2.

"New New"....yeah.

You young boys got a new chick to fantasize about lol.

To further business...

Let me remind you to love yourself first. Not that lip service you tell folks like "of course I love myself." But I mean truly love yourself, otherwise, don't expect others to love you. Real talk.

To love yourself, get to know yourself...flaws, strengths, weaknesses, quirks...and then love them because they're you.

And to continue with my rambling, here's seven tracks that get me moving right now...

Brownstone - "Five Miles To Empty"

Classic ballad warm enough to heat up the coldest of souls.

Lupe Fiasco - "A Bathing Harry"

If you still ain't up on Lupe, get familar by starting with this track. Bouncy beat, good wordplay & charisma.

Lupe Fiasco - "Glory"

Soul food. Do your own dishes.

Lloyd Banks - "We From The Bottom"

Hustler music. Wake up & grind.

De La Soul & Teenage Fan Club - "Fallin"

Off balance, off-kilter...still beautiful.

Jay-z - "Rock Star" Freestyle + NERD - "Rock Star" (Poser)

Put your shades on & crank your cockiness up a few notches. Two versions...you pick your mood & attitude.

...And since I know I'm not the only one with a kid around this piece, look below to get Kidz Bop 7 - 9 plus Gold.

Thank me later. Gotty's ™ for the children.

Reading material for you internet, ADD mofos....

Dear New York

I grew up admiring you.

I thought you were the only thing worth listening.

I wanted to be a part of your lifestyle...the Amigos with the knock system, the fatigues, the blunts, pissin in the elevator steez.

But now, times have changed and my views of you have changed.

We've grown up, we've changed, we've expanded...we've taken in more of the world and seen more things.

You didn't grow with us.

It's almost like you were "the man" when we were coming up. After all these years hustling on the block, you've become a fiend just like those you used to serve.

And now, you're weak & others are strong and it's seemingly tearing you to the core. Ghost has taken his shots, old ass Kay Slay has directed his usual, Uncle Rufus type rants towards the rest of us, Papoose..Cam way back ("...when the fuck we start bouncin"...but now the Dips got out a track called "Trap Aggins"?)...Saigon...all of you are poppin shit.

But the fact remains, other areas are gettin it in while you still talking about what you used to do.

Well, since I still love & respect you, I figure I at least owe you the due respect to tell you where I think our relationship went wrong.

1. Your arrogance - It used to be your swagger was your appeal. Now, it reeks of lack of self-confidence or knowledge of self. You're complaining about everybody else's qualities to steer the focus off the fact that you have no true identity. Humble yourself a little. Instead of knocking other areas, do as they've done and give respect due to cats who are pumpin 100K independently. When you give praise to other areas or "give" them features, it feels forced & false. Again, humble yourself. We know you were once great & we know you can be again. But right now...it ain't happening. You're in the midst of a rebuilding period so accept it.

2. "It's like New York's been soft ever since Snoop came through and crushed the buildings..." - It's true...You had the game on lock until the mid 90's. Then, N.W.A., Raiders hats & Cortez's took over & you looked dazed for a minute. You came back strong but when Tupac unleashed on you it was like the schoolyard bully had his skirt pulled. Your air of invincibility, your forcefield...it was broken. Now those who could stand strong, Jay, Nas, etc., they weathered the storm. The rest of you...well at least Tim Dog did say "Fuck Compton" back in the day. The rest of you turned on your heels and ran, only now starting to kick up a little dust again. Naysayers can say what they want about Cam & the whole Dips crew but give them credit for one thing - bringin back that NY chutzpah. Show us your confidence again.

3. Try being emotional with us again, show us another side to you. Kanye sold for a reason with his first album....he had good beats yeah...but it was moreso the "I did work at Gap at one time", everyman aesthetic that we related to. There's a reason why these other areas are selling and garnering so much attention - People want music they can feel. Anger and tension of Lil Jon/ATL's crunk shit & 3-6 been gettin buck...the party, "get into" feel of that hyphy shit...the "yeah I sold dope but I know I hurt some folks and I regret it" of trap boys all over the South...yeah man, we're vibing to all of that. Your coldness...your desire to still speak about your glory days of copping ki's from Papi...but you're still living in the same tenament building, still coppin double-ups...we've seen through it. Bring back that "you", that grit & anger, knowledge & culture, placed so well in between bars in descriptive verses.

Again, I still have love for Now Why. You've taught me so much about hip-hop culture & life. I...we owe you so much and we hate to see you slackin. It's sorta like Jordan with the Wizards...there's flashes of greatness but nothing substained & we see you struggling to be even a shadow of your former self.

I'm waiting...we're waiting.

Tru Life - "The New New York"

Love,

Gotty˜
