The argument occurred to me the other day regarding which label had the strongest roster during it's prime.
Def Jam had/always has had some heat. But they always sorta had a pure mainstream, "safe" edge to them.
The Roc...cancel Jay & you have to take them out of the running for the top spot although they could operate in a middle of the pack, consistent playoff team type of deal.
Bad Boy...no sir, factor out Big and all you got is Puff dickin disgruntled artists for dough.
Cash Money or No Limit...in their primes, maybe.
My award for strongest roster...
Death Row Records
Snoop D-O-Double G (in his prime before all the Pee Wee football, chuuch and GGW)
Kurupt (take some No Doze and wake ya ass up)
Pac...nuff said
Nate Dogg on the hooks
Dre & Daz on the boards
Make no mistake about it because in their prime, they had the whole world's attention, straight up...not just the rap world, but literally, the whole US and abroad with the murder cases in the news, the beef, the music, flaunting the gang affiliations, etc etc.
Who minded it all?
Suge Knight
Say whatever you want about that man and I might agree with you.
But on a whole, business-wise, Suge set the shit off and made it happen.
Cam callin out Jay? 50 callin out everybody? You're least favorite rapper hating your favorite rapper?
Psssh...
With Suge's influence, intialized with a less than thirty second comment on The Source Awards, Suge had two fuckin coasts at war and his label officially made the West Coast relevant to the hip-hop world again!
Shit...Suge even made it where The Source Awards and most other big media musical events become Wrestlemania Roman numeral blah blah everytime they came up.
Don't get it twisted because I'm not saying that I agree with everything Suge has said or done. Never that.
But I also can seperate business from personal and respect what he created.
Shit, the man never put out an album, never appeared on an album, and has a label that hasn't made noise in years...and he's still eatin and recieving media coverage.
Don't think Suge and The Row had a worthy impact?
Peep this from the Reginald Denis interview that was posted a few weeks ago (read the whole thing if you haven't. It's wonderful).
"And speaking of Source Awards, here’s something that you might find interesting. Did you ever wonder why Suge called out Puffy during the 1995 broadcast? Well a couple of Source staffers were hanging out at the venue during the rehearsals when Biggie and later Suge happened to wander by. Biggie began to voice his displeasure about being on Bad Boy and was talking about possibly making a change. Suge told him that he would be happy to have him at Death Row and that they should talk about how they could make that happen. And that’s how the whole mess started.”
Reggie Denis is a journalist.
But, I don't think he's influenced by all the current politics of hip-hop.
So for him to make mention of that...it all makes you wonder what if fuckin BIG had went to The Row...history would've been drastically different.
So, it's with the West Coast, the label, the music and it's influences that we give you some Dogg Pound Gangsta shit.

I love Jay-z's music as much as the next man.
And I've made the statement that I think the Dips provide some of the most entertaining music, personas, and radio interview that hip-hop has had in a while.
Those are disclaimers before some of you get all in a frenzy.
I'm not picking sides or saying "oooh, _________ won!"
All I'm going to tell you is that for the past few days...Cam has put one word in my head that makes me giggle everytime I hear it.
"Chancletas"
Be mad all you want but I find the shit entertaining as fuck lol.
Last but not least...an offering of sorts to you.
A Challenge.
