The sample. Love it or hate it, it makes hip-hop. Personally, I used to love hearing samples in songs. They added a dimension. They paid tribute to the original artists and showed current artists were not only in touch with history but students of it as well. Is it overused today? Of sorts. But, sampled hook > some non-singning bum trying to harmonize a chorus. Yeah, it saves artists some dough when they don't use samples and sing their own hooks.
