Give The Drummer Some....
The sample.
Love it or hate it, it makes hip-hop.
Personally, I used to love hearing samples in songs.
They added a dimension.
They paid tribute to the original artists and showed current artists were not only in touch with history but students of it as well.
Is it overused today?
Of sorts.
But, sampled hook > some non-singning bum trying to harmonize a chorus.
Yeah, it saves artists some dough when they don't use samples and sing their own hooks.
But half these bums can't sing a fuckin note to save their lives.
Why am I sayin this now?
One, because that Kanye we posted recently had some shit on it.
In particular, I love this Natalie Cole joint first and foremost because I love "Heard'em Say" and secondly because the song itself is ill.
Natalie Cole - "Someone That I Used To Love"
Two, I found out that "Unbreakable" and "Anotha Summer" by 213, a hot but slept on track, (Kanye reusing a beat...shame shame) are both from this Eddie Kendricks joint. (Temptations anyone?)
Eddie Kendricks - "Intimate Friends"
Third, because I found this Questlove mix and it is OH-FISH-UHHLLL(see tracklisting below).
This man always brings out the dusty soul shit and I appreciate him for it.

As well, let me tell you Heather Headley is a badass.
Chick sings the most soul version of black emo ever lol. This song has been in rotation on the low when I'm in the car with the windows up.
Heather Headley - "In My Head"
And then this joint is an HBCU band classic.
Ghosttown DJ's - "My Boo"
In newsworthy mentionings....we crossed 100motherfuckinK in visitors! woohooo!!!
So in celebration, instead of trying to remember that long ass "smokingsectionblogspotblahblah" url to tell folks, just bookmark this and pass it along....

that sampled hook greater than comment is a cop out for being too lazy or not being able to write a good hook on your own. aint nothing wrong with sampling but at least try to make the song somewhat youre own and original. kids if you dont know how to make songs stick to freestyling
disagree of sorts.
I like a good creative hook. but for my personal tastes, a sample is preferred. I come from the late 80's, early 90's hip-hop generation and the samples used then were just crazy. they went absent for a long time it seemed so i'm glad to see them back strong.
and again, i feel like it's paying homage and showing that hip-hop isn't the only music that producers and artists listen to.
