Today, I wanna take you back to bring you forward.
I had no trouble picking where to start.
This artist is definitely a part of hip-hop history.
This album is not.
At least not in the mainstream sense.
It should be.
Paul has worked his magic over the years with overwhelming results...Gravediggaz, Stetsasonic, Handsome Boy Modeling School, De La Soul & more.
None of those touch this album.
Period.
Why?
Paul has been well known as the master of skits.
Here, he laces all the skits WITH the music to create a movie...on wax.
The skits are not filler as on most albums but help the story to progress.
The main characters, two cats, Tariq (Breeze Brewin from the Juggaknots) and True (a rapper by the name of Sha...who we haven't heard from since apparently lol).
Even as seemingly unknowns, these two shine.
The rest of the cast is made up of names well all know.
Chris Rock as a crackhead.
Everlast as a cop.
Big Daddy Kane as a pimp.
Kool Keith as a gun dealer.
Also, Chubb Rock (jea jea jea!!!) comes thru and rips a verse, Biz Mark beatboxes, Special Ed pops in....need I go on?
Each mc that rhymes manages to stay on topicand play his part.
Not for nothing, this is one of the most complete albums you'll hear ever created.
My favs?
Big Daddy Kane - "Mackula's Theory"
Chubb Rock & Biz Markie - "Mr. Large"
Breezly Brewin, Sha, Superstar - "Put The Next Man On"
But don't listen to those as seperate pieces...you have to experience the whole.
Prince Paul - A Prince Among Thieves
So yeah...the single has been literally STUCK in my head for a while now. I been singin it, switchin the lyrics old school style...."My name Johnnyyyy...last name Gotttyyyy"
Charlie Wilson - Charlie, Last Name, Wilson
And has it really been that long since 1990 or am I actually getting older?
Michael Jackson - Thriller (1990)
Pat's home you bastards!

Let me just say...I really forgot how raw Big was.
Forgive me.
So I had to go back and listen to Life After Death for the past four days.
Even with Puff watering him down w/some beats that are mediocore at times, Big still shined.
Big could craft songs that worked on different levels.
Clubs? Check
Streets? Check
Ladies, fellas, average listener to the hip-hop enthusiasts? Check, check, check and check.
Honestly, the only other person who's been able to do that in recent years besides Big...Jay-z.
But, Big laid the blueprint.
Pac did it as well, but had an added dimensions when he mixed in emotion, activism and introspection.
But Big....Big's wordplay and lyricism > Pac's.
Yeah, I said.
It's apple and oranges.
I'm the quintessential Pac fan of course so don't start whining.

Free Your Mind...
Mannnn, even though there's been tons of women r&b groups, these ladies stand out to me. They didnt have the most powerful or soulful voices on the planet, but dammit they were put together well. And I KNOW some of you older cats remember that video where they played as lounge singers. Made grown ass men seem like prepubescent young'ns again having to "readjust." Sexy ass women that made me appreciate the black female on a whole new level. So, no literary jargon today, just a few words and a lot of music. Enjoy, and be on the lookout for Retro's third post on love and relationships. Outty 5000.

The Sound Of Music
What did I hear when I listened to Trane and Monk together?
Two musicians in their prime playing some of the best live recorded music you'll ever hear.
Seriously.
This was found earlier this year after it was "lost" or undiscovered since the 1957 performance at Carnegie Hall.
It's remarkable.
I picture it like this.
Trane, using his music to showcase his newfound strength in spirituality, with his eyes closed, blowing with all his might.
Monk, ante being stepped up and enjoying it, brings his A-game as well.
What does it produce?
Pure beauty.
Somebody asked me why I named this joint The Smoking Section.
It's simple.
Some of the greatest music of all time came from the jazz era.
It was when artists worked for the love of the art first, then money...or drugs lol.
But still, most of the music and the artists were pure.
Today, it'd probably be comparable to the above pic. People vibing. Moving. The music flowing.
And I see being there in a smokey room, watching and hearing it take place, socializing, dressed sharp as a tack with a smooth suit, a hat and some wingtips...it's the epitome of cool. There was no smoking section, but a literal haze of smoke and a figurative cloud of the magnificent taking place around you.
As is this album.

And I just figured you needed these two.
Elton summed it up so well.
"if someone else is suffering enough to write it down/it's easier to have those songs around"
Elton John - "Sad Songs (Say So Much)"
And she blows...
Sinead O'Connor - "Nothing Compares 2 U"
Let me be honest.
I'm not a fan of Houston rap generally.
Too general and repetitive.
H-Town hates that about me and is forever trying to give me different stuff to sample.
He gave me Magno, who "goes hard" lol.
I like him.
Subject matter? Very similar to the rest of the city.
But, he's got charm, a comedic sense and a distinctive voice.
I like the dude even though I kept reading his name and thinking it was mango at first lol. Hey, I love mangos for real.
Here's the cd that blew them up in Houston.
Them being Magno and Mike Jones.
You know the rest. Mike blew. Magno's still on the grind.
Hopefully he gets his shine real soon especially since he's linked up with Clue and Desert Storm South.

And they're asking about the server. Well, we're working on it. There's a lot of issues, RIAA/legalities & bandwith included, that we're trying to figure out. Keep the faith though that we're trudging along with it. If not, we're considering a few other substantial changes to make this place even more desirable for you.

Old School New School
Ok folks, this post is all over the fucking place. Retro here signing in for Gotty. Today's post and direction doesn't really have a direction, it's all over the place actually. It's just a showing of our musical muscle by throwing out different shit. Bigups to Dally on this one.
For the older folks, you remember these shits. The drug dealer phones we used to call 'em around my way. No reception, but big enough for the whole block to see that you were stuntin. With the fatass gold rope chains, fresh pumas/nikes/adidas, sweatsuits and 4-finger rings. Back then it was the bigger and gaudier, the better.
Not so these days. Razrs dominate the market, completely opposite of what we liked 15+ years ago. Small, sleek, simple design with some technological flair to prove that big things come in small packages, pause.
In terms of music, can you really say something is the best of ALL time? That's debatable, but to me, not at all. Sure, it all adds up to interesting discussion, but you have to think in terms of how the people of the past would react to music of the future, not just the other way around. With that said, here's a nifty little mixtape comparing Jay-z to Big Daddy Kane. I would have preferred Rakim, but eh, I'm not a mixtape dj.
