"It Was The Best Of Time; It Was The Worst Of Times..."

...It was 2005. So it's the end of the year. We were real reluctant to do a big "end of the year" write-up because it seems so standard. So here it is in a nutshell. We started out as uno,Gotty™, sending an email with a few songs, old & new, to a group of about five to ten friends. Sort of a daily inspirational/"music makes me high" deal. That was roughly March of this year. It grew. We created this spot & started posting here around May/June. It, too, grew. Roughly 200,000 visitors later, here we are. That was our online year. What happened in with rest of the world...well Skillz can cover that for you. If you're not familiar, Skillz (formerly Mad Skillz) had a few tracks back in the day...."The Nod Factor" & a few hot mixtape tracks. But in recent years, he's slid off the scene, only to show up at the end of each year with the "The Rap Up" and each one has been entertaining & amusing. Skillz manages to run down all the major news in entertainment and the world, all from the perspective of a former one-hit wonder/current parking lot attendant in Va./ghostwriter to some top shelf label talents. Previous years' entries Skillz - "The Rap Up" 2002 2003 2004 And now, this year's version... Skillz - The Wrap Up 2005 Throughout our short time here, we've tried to lace you with the new, the different, the unheard. I believe this album qualifies as such. Check the blurb then check the album. This trio consists of Christian McBride, Ahmir Thompson aka ?uestlove and Uri Caine. The musical palette of this group is amazing, especially for a three piece. They do enlist some help from guitar virtuoso Pat Martino and session horn man Jon Swana on a few tracks, which just adds to the color. My favorite tracks are the numerous funkier groove numbers on the disk. Craine's tribute to Grover Washington, aptly titled "Grover," "Call for All Demons" by the jazz mystic Sun Ra and Marvin Gaye's "Trouble Man Theme" are all 24/7 head boppin' good. But it's the vibrant keys, the staccato drums and the bubbling bass of "Ain't It the Truth" that really does it for me, including a McBride solo that gives new meaning to funky. On the more abstract tip are "Lesson #4" and the extremely heady "(re)MOVEd" which comes complete with modified siren sound effects. As a bonus, Christian McBride does a bass only version of Bill Withers' "Just the Two of Us," which is awesome. The Philadelphia Experiment - The Philadelphia Experiment (2001) Normally, we don't get a chance to allow true independents to shine. However, the mood is blissful over here right about now & my dude hit me up with a request so we put him down. Hailing from the eastside of Long Beach Ca. by way of Washington D.C.,comes Big Speech! A veteran out of the Black Mob camp is back with an all new cd called "The Passion". With cameos from the Black Mob capo's - Alias,Black Lou, Sally Balls and guest vocals by Slim Thug, 2pac, Big C-Style and Eric Wright, this is a tremendous event for your ears!! All production was handled by Big Speech. Nineteen tracks of pure fire for your audio. Check it out. Big Speech - The Passion And now, time for some straight rambling to finish the year off...straight like the end of the album & dudes is just doing the do on the outro! 1.) This is one of the best R&B albums to come out in the past two decades. This joint, to me, is the the R&B version of "the purple tape" from Raekwon...we'll start dubbin this one, "the red tape". Fuck the golden showers, the court cases & the strange personality. All R. Kelly needs to do is keep puttin out hits and we'll ultimately forgive all his misgivings, because through it all, our artists are here to entertain, period. And the man has managed to do that throughout the years. R. Kelly - R 2.) Two songs that are tough & have been in constant rotation the past two days... a.) Teedra Moses - "Just Wanna Be Your Girl" Why? The beat is infectious & it's innocently smooth. I've been runnin around singin the chick parts no homo. It's just got a real feel good vibe to it (I kept listening to it over & over again on D.Rose's Myspace page til finally I just had to go ahead and grab it. b.) Joe Budden, Jae Millz & Stack Bundles - "6 Minutes of Death" Simply because Joey shitted all over this track & did what he does best, spit. 3.) No matter how we grow and change, our essence is that raw boom-bap, aggresive hip-hop. There's alot of songs that epitomize that sound but this has gotta be one of the best. The only other track I can honestly remember these dudes coming out with was "Change The Style" and I remember they had a wacky type video that ran on Rap City way back in the day. I don't care. This one song was enough to cement them in my memory for life. Son Of Bezerk - "What Could Be Better Bitch" 4.) Pimp C is FREE!..yep, comin home today. Chea chea chea!!! Now I just want the federal penitentiary system to free my brother JM aka Cookiehead,my other brother Ichy and my lil cousin Jay and most of life will be back in order. 5.) I, Gotty™, wanna give credit to the original folk in the email group who listened to me rant and the few who encouraged me to do this shit. And I want to give an extra special birdcall shoutout to NquestII and CIPH4 who help me update and make changes to this piece on the reg...and listen to my rants and wishes. Dally, MrC, Dingle, Retro, The Facts, Froz1, Louie Po/Dominicanluimi, Donpoppa, HtownTXballa, Kim L aka F Lupus...the whole Co-D's page...respect due. Be sure to go to their page and give them some comments & show them some love. 6.) Despite all the music we share with you, never forget to go out & support your favorite artists yo. They gotta eat too. 7.) I want to thank you (yeah, you reading this) sincerely and from the bottom of my heart. Celebrate with us & let's throw up more comments than you all ever have before lol. Salute! John Gotty™Got a request? We're gonna change the game up a little. If you request something & we have it, all we ask is that you upload something as well. Family Ties....

"Fredo, you're my older brother, and I love you. But don't ever take sides with anyone against the family again. Ever." Loyalty is a lost value these days. With all of the "ride or die" chanting going on, I don't believe some people who are runnin around chanting the shit are even considering gettin down with their team if the shit hits the fan. From those close to me, I only ask two things...trust & loyalty. Period. That may be why I only have a few friends lol. Many of the people I have considered friends in the past weren't able to maintain their loyalties for whatever reason. Where I'm from & amongst my crew, we call it "the code." "Man I put that on the code, my dude." What does the code consist of? There's no specific guidelines moreso than it's just understood. Amongst your crew, you don't lie, cheat, steal or decieve. Amongst your crew, you do anything they ask you to do within reason. And the things that are unreasonable, if they're life or death matters, you do them. There is no gray area. Anyone who knows me will confirm this. For me, if I tell you I'm down with you, that's it, no question, end of story. Whatever that consists of, hell or jail, I'm with you. All I ask is the same in return. For the two individuals I speak of & direct this to, you know who you are. You broke the code. "I know it was you Fredo. You broke my heart. You broke my heart." Dedicated to those who switched sides and refused to ride. You were disloyal. You war was my war, but nevermore. DMX feat. The Lox - "We Don't Give A Fuck" Pardon my negativity, but yo, it's still a blog and every now and then I like to get a little personal and air some shit out. Back to the originally scheduled program. We need Wu-Tang back in full effect. Why? Pure misogny. Mad at your chick? Play this Tone Starks track at real loud while she's in the car with you. Down Bottom...

Normally, when people try to act as if they're hip to the South, the first artist they say nowadays are Scarface, Outkast, UGK & Bun-B. Cliche. No disrespect because we love those dudes. But please understand that the South has always been making noise... a.) ...outside of Atlanta & Houston. b.) ...well back into the early 90's. c.) ...and music with a meaning. One group & one album that always gets left out when mentioned in the mix of Southern pioneers is this duo. For anyone who tells you the South doesn't have lyrical abilities, please direct them to this or any of these cats albums. While the lyrics aren't groundbreaking, the delivery, and the word placement & choice combine with choice beats to make what stands as a Southern classic. "Pimps"..."Mr. Big" and "Lay It Down" from their Coming Out Hard album will still ultimately move any party in the South on any given Saturday night. Matter of fact, there's not a day, like 'Face's The Diary, when I can't put this album on, cue it to "Pimps", "Armed Robbery", or "Mr. Big" and give me day a certified ego boost and enhance my swagger. Eightball & MJG - Coming Out Hard Like it or dislike it, while Outkast opened the door for the South, No Limit kicked in the door, made everybody get down and take notice. Unless you lived under a rock or were in a vegetative state, there's simply no way that you didn't jam to at least one No Limit artist or a single that laced the radio & clubs during the mid-90's. Master P picked a team of artists & created a movement unlike any other before it where artists shined alone and came together as well on each other's work to create a solid musical catalog, not Wu, Rawkus, or Bad Boy. Backed by Beats By The Pound, the label simply couldn't miss. And while you may say, "but what about lyrics?", anyone who knows the work of the label will simply tell you to stray away from the repetitive radio playlist and check out some of their true artists who could lay bars with a ferocity unmatched. While others may posture & talk the talk, for some reason, you were lead to really believe the words of most rappers from the NO (pre-Cash Money/Lil Wayne/"we Bloods" era) because for many years, New Orleans was notoriously the murder capital of the USA. Below are several albums that prolly flew under the radar for most, but I'm wiling to bet at every Southern has at least one or more of these albums as a staple of their collection. Mr. Serv-On - Life Insurance I'm Bout It soundtrack Young Bleed-My Balls and My Word Fiend - Street Life Mac-World War III The only artists we neglected to show love to here are Souljah Slim (R.I.P., one of my favorites of all time). It'd take a whole post dedicated to him to give him proper shine. Even excluding his work, P created a pretty stout roster without a doubt. Other notable albums worth mentioning from the label were Master P - Ghetto Dope and Silkk The Shocker - Charge It To The Game. And I've been struggling to find the right words to describe this dude's appeal but I simply can't. I'll try to sum it up like this.... •Originally from ATL •Always outshines on any guest appearance you’re lucky enough to catch him on. •Was at one time signed to Hypnotized Minds but no longer is. Still, he has a heavy independent catalog. •An amazing flow, where he can start off slow as molasses, pick up the pace & end up as probably a worthy challenger to Twista. •An ear for picking the right beats that are quintessential Southern “wang” and work with his flow & not against it. For reference, check the tracks "No Remorse," "Mr. Big," "International Terrorist," & "Slang & Serve." Nuff said. T-Rock-Rock Solid 4:20 T-Rock-Conspiracy Theory The South has been constantly knocked for being not bringing style & lyrical offerings to the table. For those of you who believe that, and for fans of the South's impact on hip-hop, I'd strongly suggest giving the documetary Dirty States Of America a look. The dvd traces the early beginnings of the Southern contributors & their influences, big-name as well as locally known artists, & regional perspectives and added flavors that each area brings, exposing the complex and unique mix of whole genres inside genres that have been created by the people of the south.. The people at Lyricist Lounge put together a dvd that entertaining, informative & truly respectable by giving the South it's chance to shine. In Stray Shots, you'll find a sprinkling of a few more albums that were regionally strong but under the radar nationally or before the South stepped into the spotlight. Nevertheless, they're still strong albums. • Know any other sites worthy of mentioning? Maintain your own site & want to do a link exchange? More Than Music....

It's not all about music. (Well, maybe for you, but not neccessarily for us.) Every now & then we like to change the pace up around here. Right around Thanksgiving, I set out to try & read at least twenty books before the New Year arrived. See, I'm an English major by education & profession and I'm fairly enthusiastic about reading, when time permits. So I decided to make time. I've got six days left to meet my goal & I'm very close to making it. What follows are some of the books I read that are worth picking up if the type of thing interests you. Standing At The Scratch Line and Echoes Of A Distant Summer - Guy Johnson My brother called me from the joint & suggested I pick these two up. He was on point. Written by the son of Maya Angelou (yeah...I know right. Who bagged Maya?), these books were prolly the best of the batch. Long. Descriptive. Detailed. The follow the path of a violent, bloodthirsty character named King Tremain as he rises from a New Orleans family feud to prominence in the, fights in wars, battles the mob & helps establish a black Oklahoma township all in a search to achieve manhood & respect. The second book follows the path of his grandson as he unwittingly is forced to pick up his grandfather's war with enemies created before his time. The Harris Men - R.M. Johnson I read the second book, The Harris Family, first and had to grab this one once I found it available. Well written, the author traces the lives of four young men & their father after he abandons his family and shows the varying paths their lives have followed and the issues they've faced growing up fatherless. Finding out he has cancer and a limited amount of time to live, the father decides to seek out his sons who are now grown men and must decide if and how they will accept him into their lives. I found the second book to be better & more engaging but this sets the scene mentally for the activities that occur in the second book. The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-time - Mark Haddon It's somewhat oxymoronic to say a book can be boring & entertaining all in one but this one accomplishes it. Entertaining in that it delves into the world of autistic boy, his life & travels. Boring in that, going into the mind of an autistic person can be befuddling for someone who doesn't suffer from the disease. Perhaps I shouldn't use the word boring because that connotates "don't read it" but do. Dealing with the occassional autistic child myself, I walked away from this book with a whole different understanding of their world, the troubles they face & their amazing understanding & perception of things. The Lamb: A Novel - The Gospel According To Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal - Christopher Moore Literally had to laugh at times with this book. Hilarously, it traces the "lost" 33 years of Christ's life from the time from his birth to his death latter years, all told through the perspective of "Levi who is called Biff." There's not alot of words to accurately describe this book but if you have a.) a working knowledge of the Bible, and b.) the ability to accept humor & art as that, then you'll like this book. It's not blasphemous but I'm sure some religious zealot will find fault at Biff's "gospel." I'm not a religious zealot but towards the end it did become kind of sad, because...well, you go in knowing the history of Christ and what will transpire at the end. The ride before you get there, though, is tremendously enthralling & well worth the read. Dreams Of My Father - Barrack Obama I've seen the DNC 2004 speech, where Barrack rose to national prominence, and enjoyed his speech & his story so much that I wanted to read more. Born of white mother from Kansas, a Kenyan father and raised in Hawaii...yeah, that's alot. While at times it's sketchy early on, moving from past, to present, by the a third of the way into the book you settle into Barrack's writing style & he seems to settle into his pen. What follows is the interesting story of a young American man as he discovers his identity, and purpose, most striking are his tales of his trip to his father's homeland as an adult and his early social work in the city of Chicago. Worth the read if just to understand the various paths to success that people from all walks of life follow. Part Of My Soul Went With Him - Winnie Mandela Want to know what it is to be the wife of famed, worldwide, political entity? Interested in seeing how it is to deal with true adversity, political, social or self-imposed, every day? A collection of memoirs of the ex-wife of Nelson Mandela who grew into a political force of reckoning of her own, this book is splendid as a history lesson as well as a impetus to keep moving forward and promoting social and personal change and growth. Who's Gonna Take the Weight: Manhood, Race, and Power in America - Kevin Powell I went into this book hoping to be entertained on an intellectual level & expecting maybe to gain nothing more than perhaps a few sparse ideas. I came out gaining a renewing feeling to learn and alot more than I had bargained. I knew Powell wrote, seeing as how he was the unofficial biographer of Tupac, had been one of the leading writer's for Vibe in it's infancy & appeared on the very first MTV's Real World. What he lacks in penmanship is perhaps Powell's strength, his ability to convey his ideas in adorned enough but plain words. And his ideas are very concise & on-point, relaying the perspective of first generation hip-hop kid, a "Rap City" kid as I commonly call our age group. Never boring, Powell's collection of essays cover dealing with women, being at the top of the game one day & waking up in the cellars the next day, coming of age and accessing the role the first generation hip-hop audience's role in today's music & society. If you're a member of that audience, and even more, if you're a late twenty/early thirtysomething black male, you will feel as if Powell is holding a personal conversation with you. If you don't fall in that demographic, I still feel comfortable in saying you will learning something and walking away with a few morsels to feed upon as you travel your path. My next personal goal is to learn as much about saving/stacking cash in legitimate ways ("...yo, sit back relax catchin contacts, sip your cog-nac/ And let's all wash this money through this laundry mat")...so if you got books, info, tips, anything on mutual funds, investing, etc. etc....Martha Stewart me holmes & put me up on game. While on the topic of reading, agree or disagree, KRS-One drops his two cents asking "Did Stan Tookie Williams really have to die?" in his article "Food For Thought Is Better Than a Meal" In related news, they dissed the Governator in his hometown. Authorities in Austria removed Schwarzenegger's name off of Austrian soccer stadium. • Know any other sites worthy of mentioning? Maintain your own site & want to do a link exchange? We've recently been browsing other blogs to see what the vibe is like elsewhere while trying to hone in on our own niche & vibe. Now, I'm the first to tell you our shit DOES NOT stink & we on our own dicks. But I gotta give props where props are due. Alot of other sites are doing interesting things with their work & it's worth a look. The beauty of the emergence of blogs is that the average joe with words can share their views on various topics with the world. And with so many people contributing, there's bound to be someone doing something to which everyone can relate. Additionally, blogs are becoming one of the major ways to show the thoughts of the average person, have their voice heard & offset the constant badgering and forcefeeding of ideas that mainstream media is force feeding us. Examples... • We've spoke on this before - the state the relationship of the first generation of hip-hop babies & the current generation of fans and Rachel Tavern asks are "Are Hip Hop's Old Heads Whining Too Much?" Of course, they are. But it's only because if one had a hand in raising a child, watched it grow & saw it taking a turn for the worse, or losing track of it's roots, wouldn't you speak up? Whatever your take, the article is worth a read. • Styles By The Gram has an interesting Wu-Tang fixation, similar to Dingle'sr Neptunes/Clipse love affair over at Am I High? lol (shoutouts to that dude!), that is applaudable. Most notably, their feature spot on Ghost Deni droppin knowledge on shoes, slang & style in promo spots on MTV2 earlier in the year called "The World According To Pretty Toney", which are short, sweet & definitely worth watching. • The Brilliance and highsnobiety both do a wonderful job mixing fashion, music, everything couture, entertainment & everything else irrelevant but very entertaining. Coke & rap? No I don't mean selling cooked up coke. I mean the actual usage. Think it doesn't exist? I can tell you from firsthand experience that it does. You prolly may/may not be suprised how many of your favorite artists treat their noses with that blow. A Silent Flute always brings an interesting take on all things social & urban and their article on "Is cocaine raps most unsung substance?" is an interesting read. Still not satisfied with those offerings? Check out Hip-Hop-Blogs for a listing of more hip-hop related blogs. But remember where your home is homie. The one site that's basically the archtype for us has always been Regnyouth without a doubt. Personally, their style & offerings have always been greatly appreciated. And as of recently, with the holiday season & all the emotional tidal waves folks have been going thru, we've been recieving tons of requests and especially alot for "soul searching", introspective type music. For that, we leaned on Regnyouth to pick out some offerings that would cover that base because the music they offer covers the whole spectrum or at least touches each. All of these offerings come from there and we wholeheartedly suggest checking there for more. Bob Marley - Acoustic Sessions Grover Washington - Live At The Bijou Ramsey Lewis - Funky Serenity Funkadelic - Cosmic Slop In particular, we stumbled across this writeup & album & remembered how moving this album is. The tracks mentioned in the article are indeed spectacular without a doubt so listen & enjoy. Words & link from Regnyouth.com After spending 12 years as a member of Bob Marley's Wailers, Peter Tosh was eager to break free from the shadow of the legendary frontman. In 1976, he released 'Legalize It', still one of the most significant albums in the history of reggae. The title track expresses one of Tosh's many political causes, justifying the legalization of marijuana as a remedy for various medical ailments. 'Burial' is one of several tracks that features the talents of the Wailers' stand-out lead guitarist, Al Anderson. Tosh adds his own seasoning to the reggae pot as he incorporates keyboards in 'Whatcha Gonna Do' and synthesizers and sound effects on 'Igziabeher'. 'Ketchy Shuby', a sing-along about fooling around, features the background vocal talents of Rita Marley, Bunny Wailer, and Judy Mowatt. Tosh's life ended too early, and 'Legalize It' is the strongest testament to his legacy. Take a listen, and share the spirit of his genius. Peter Tosh - Legalize It And personally, I've been reading quite a few more politically charged books & materials & nothing out today can really touch the following offerings that tap into the musically side of that spirit. I'm a casual fan of spoken word poetry. At times, it's a beautiful especially if done right & has something to share. But, most of the time when I hit coffeeshop type shows, everyone is babbling fast & not articulating and much less offering nothign of substance, imitating what they heard on Def Poetry Jam instead of being original. Not the case with these three features. Coming to acclaim in the changing times of 1960's & 70's, the Last Poets & Gil-Scott Heron have been adopted & remain hip-hop mainstays. I struggle to find the right words to promote them and encourage listeners to check for them...the most I can say is that The Last Poets will move you, especially on "The White Man's Got A God Complex," "Niggers Are Scared Of Revolution," & "When The Revolution Comes." While I think older generations of artists and adults place far too much emphasis on the Civil Rights & Black Power movements today, these albums do allow for listeners to understand the fervor and energy the times possessed, something that simply reading a book or hearing a story told simply cannot convey. The Last Poets - Real Rap (Two Discs) Disc 1 Disc 2 Gil Scott-Heron - Pieces of a Man Gil Scott-Heron & Brian Jackson - Winter In America Gil Scott-Heron - Ghetto Style Gil Scott-Heron - The Revolution Will Not Be TelevisedKnow any other sites worthy of mentioning? These words moved me. Yeah, we just "reviewed" the same artist, same album last week. But, my man put his pen game down better than most authors out right now. So fuck it. Just sit back, spark something or pop a top, cue the album & vibe with what you're about to read. Words by JohnnyCage202 I'm not here to argue, debate, or bicker. I'm here to tell you the truth... The truth is, "Trap Muzik" set the bar for the younger generation's next great emcee. The truth is, "Trap Muzik" is what "Let's Get It: Thug Motivation 101" was emulating. The truth is, "Trap Muzik" marinated in the authenticity and ridiculous wit "The Carter 2" was trying to attain. The truth is, "Trap Muzik" is the most introspective, realistic, intelligent, and articulate presentation of the life a hustler since "Reasonable Doubt"... But make no mistake about, this was not the memoirs of a man who sold his soul to the game and chased money at all costs. For every "I never prayed to God, I prayed to Gotti. That's right it's wicked. That's life, I live it" from Jay, there's the polar opposite "Just think of us as chameloens, adapting to situations. But accusations of stealin'? Burglarizin' ya houses? Man you just hurtin' my feelins" from Tip. You can actually picture the guy holding the door open for an old lady with a .45 on his hip and like ten years in his pockets... Put yourself in the shoes of a gifted man who feels his talent is wasting away and wants to see more from his life than drug dealing. Put yourself in the shoes a rookie rapper who watched his hard work and painstaking effort go to waste with his debut album. You got the shoes on? You laced 'em up? Now listen to "I Can't Quit" and tell me you can't hear this man's hunger and perseverance give every word an extra kick. Listen to how he meticulously crafted his verses and chose such a simple and honest deliverly to make it sound like he's just sitting across the table from you. I'm not from 8 Mile and I never threw up my mom's spaghetti, but I know all about the 1/2 determination and 1/2 "I don't give a f k" attitude that comes along with "As long as it's somebody up in heaven who keep blessin' the G, T.I.P'll still be blessin' CDs. So haters you can see these! Cuz I'm back now with something to prove. Everything to gain, pimpin; nothing to loose..." Before Mr. Wall officially took the title, The People's Champ was T.I.P; they loved him, he loved them. "I'm well known in the hood like the dopeman's phone number. Roll anything I can throw some 24s under. N s talk bad bout the man, but I sure wonder: Why the dopeboys f k wit 'em and the h s love him?" They f ed with him because he was them. If they had talent to rap and the amazing gift to craft rhymes, they would've rhymed like Tip. When they came back from seein' their P.O. tired and agitated, and they don't feel like agruing with their little brothers and tellin' 'em to stay in school, they put on "Be Better Than Me." To that one dirty kid in the back of your class (you know, the kid you'd feel guilty about joking on becuase you knew his situation was f ed up), Tip spoke to him too. "Never be ashamed of how you live or where you from, 'cause when you stack a mill, n z will see how far you've come." You'd think the dude did nothing but read Kipling before goin' in the booth. He personified the frustrations and hope of the common man, but nothing seemed forced... "Trap Muzik" was balanced. For every "24s", "Look What I Got", and "Bezzle" that gave you the material highs of a dealer, there was and adequate and graphic depiction of the emotional lows. Tip wasn't the dude to point the fingers at everybody and blame it all on society. "T.I. vs. T.I.P" and "I Still Luv You" showed you a man who not only had no problem taking full responsibility for his foolish actions. If Jay's father could rhyme and could answer Hova's "Where Have You Been?", it would most likely sound like Tip's last verse on "I Still Luv You": How could I criticize my daddy on that last verse? Lookin' at my own dirt, n a you got some nerve. But be that as it may, I got some s t to say; It's been a secret, I can't keep it for another day. I got a lil' girl, not just two lil' boys And that's been killin' me inside, eatin' me alive. And I can't find the words, nor the nouns or verbs To express what you deserve. Girl, you worth the world! But I'm a man and I ain't perfect, if you hear me out, I'll tell you what had happened, when, why, where, and how. Me and yo mama met, we kinda kicked it off, But we wasn't 'posed to have a baby, we was just chillin' out... On the one hand you wanna lean on him for ditchin' his daughter, but then on the other hand your proud of the guy for finally accepting his responsibilty... There was no wasted verse on "Trap Muzik". There was no half song or ridiculously cheesy radio single. "No More Talk" was a lyrical blast to every individual who continued to doubt his skill, and a scolding to every rapper who continues to market mediocore rhymes to the hood. "If you ain't bussin' bout nuthin, then we ain't equal. You just cussin' for nuthin and poisonin' people, and it's embarrassing laughin' at all of your songs." [Dre 3OOO] "The South got sumthin to say!" [/Dre 3OOO] At things that begin must come to an end. If you live a life of crime, there are two garunteed endings: death, or jail. "Long Live The Game" is Tip in his best element, story telling, but there is no happy ending. The shine of his '96 Impala or the steel in his lap offered no help with the Feds on his tail. Dying at the end of the song, Tip joined the eery ranks of "Ready To Die" and "I Am" with the violent ending that fades to a haunting silence. You hear the choppers fly over and you can picture the crime scene of just "another dead n r" that probaly wouldn't even make it on the news... I'm gettin tired of typing this, and I know the majority of you won't read all of this anyway, but listen to "Trap Muzik" now and listen to how it still holds up with any album released after it. I said "Trap Muzik" was classic when it dropped, and that people wouldn't realize who good it was until years later. When XXL first reviewed it, they gave it an "L", in true plea coppin' fashion, they re-reviewd it and gave it a "XL" this past summer... It's classic. I'm tellin' ya like I always have... JohnnyCage202 T.I. - Trap Muzik Added bonus....highly slept on and a definite precursor to the above album. Seemingly hard to come by as well so get it while you can. T.I. - I'm Serious This joint has been leaked as the advance. Thirteen tracks. I've had it for over a week & it sounds like some b-grade material or whatever. It's got a few cuts but I haven't actually been able to give it a thoro listen. Listen & judge for dolo. T.I. - The K.I.N.G. [Advance][2005][GroupRip] Fresh Link And, admitted, I'm about to hop on this man's bandwagon. The self-titled album was high quality R&B. It didn't have the typical formula that's so heavily copied; instead it was somewhat of a sonic listening experience. Van Hunt - Acoustic EP Van Hunt - Napster Sessions By request (and still up from the previous time it was upped) Van Hunt - Van Hunt And here's an ill little Christmas collective. Already said I'm not a big fan of Xmas albums because they seem too much like they've been put together in the studio. But with Keys on board & his ear for what's hot, I actually gave this a strong listen and enjoyed it. Check for a tracklisting, dl and enjoy...oh yeah, I'm definitely vibing to the Mary J./Angie Ma collabo and I ain't even from NYC lol. I had to go ahead and break it down. Sometimes, people send me stuff that doesn't really "fit." It's just not album. Some of it is huge collections that I don't want folk to miss out on while browsing all the other stuff. The stuff can't be characterized as just music. Alot of times, it's true DJ artwork. And when they give me tracklistings, I feel like I'm shorting you by just putting up a link & not seeing what gems are located in the albums. So...I just created a page that I'll continually update when they throw us stuff like this. First off, Kim L, aka "Ms. F. Lupus" to me, gave a three offerings that deserve full attention. We really wanted to get this Richard Pryor box set the other week but couldn't get our hands on it on such short notice. Luckily, she came thru and blessed us and you all & for that we're appreciative. On a personal note, I've listened to all these albums at some point & time in my life and recently went back and listened to some of these since his death. To hear him speak on drug abuse, women, Black folk, society...we lost a talent who paved the way for your favorite comedians today....might I at least suggest "Heartattacks" from the Wanted discs for a damn good laugh...hell listen to both discs. You can thank me later. As well, she's thrown in a twelve disc Motown box set & a Motown Christmas two disc set. Finally, a few albums mixed in the stray shots section are contributions that she made. To her, I truly want to say thank you. • A Motown ChristmasMotown Chartbusters (12 Disc Set)Richard Pryor-And It's Deep Too (9 Albums) And MrC...if Dally's a beast, MrC has got to be Grendel or something. I can't even talk up the stuff he's dropped that's in Stray Shots as well as in Goddamn That DJ Made My DayDJ Stix - Different WorldsDJ Stix - 2nd Nature As well, let me give an extra dookie shoutout to facin2130 and froz1 for their recent contributions... and if I forgot you, charge it to my head & not my heart for real. "Straight Gangsterism"

Yeah...I know Mike ain't in that pic but goddamn when those four motherfuckers were together they put the South on the map for a Southerner. We knew we had talent when these boys dropped. Fresh off a split with original member Willie D, the Geto Boys didn't miss a beat. In fact, the addition of Big Mike added more lyrical ferocity to the group. Mike had already proven himself as a member of The Convicts ("Free World" anyone? Don't sleep on "the Pita Man"). With another artist added to the group who focused on a balance of delivery and lyrics, Scarface only stepped his game up further. All three members, Bushwick, Face & Mike, ripped "Mr. Officer". On solo efforts, they brought heat to the track. But, it was when you hear Mike & Face paired up that you see the true power of these two, on some Twin Towers, Olajuwon & Sampson, 'Zo & Zeke type shit. "No Nuts No Glory," "Straight Gangsterism"...Mike doin his do...."Raise Up"...'Face solo..."Murder After Midnight"...woohoo. Dare I say, 'Face owes part of his legacy to Mike pushin him on this particular album. Geto Boys-Til Death Do Us Part Real talk. We been on these two dudes bandwagon early. We were gonna do another post. I mean we are on a pretty mean tear like the Colts right now if I do say so myself. But then Dally™ came thru as usual and shitted on that idea. As always, Control + F is your friend. I found a few gems I needed in the mix of all these (Yessirrrr I was blarin "How To Catch A Bitch" and "Retaliation" By Celly Cel this morn on the way to work!). I could highlight quite a few but I'll let you do your own diggin. First time I've seen one of these lists with so much South shit on it. Finally. Dear America...

We're what you made us. Young. Crazy. Disenfranchised. You feed us these poisons. Salute yourself. Tookie may or may not have been guilty of the murders for which he's set to die. I don't believe that's why you're choosing to kill him. Truly, he's probably facing death because he founded an organization that, eventually, perpetuated the death of thousands. Do you understand that in their early beginnings, Gangster Disciples, Blackstone Rangers & Crips were created to help protect the community? To safeguard it against negative outside influences such as police brutality, and larger, more organized crime groups? Do you realize they were founded in part to maintain a hold on the one thing we seemingly still had, our communties and neighborhoods? Do you understand that, in their origins, they were meant to unify? You created and helped continue the endless cycle that entraps many a poor youth...not just Black, but poor people period (Did you forget about the poor literally trapped in the NO during Katrina?). Your school systems fails our youth on many levels. The judicial system favors those who have the finances to pay for favors. The penal system is a billion dollar industry and houses more Black males than our nation's colleges. The political system only cares about the poor every tow or four years, when it needs their vote. Then and only then do politicians come around, make promises, only to renig on them after the votes are counted (...if they're counted...Florida anyone?). You've continously emasculated the Black male by pulling him from the household, placing him in jail and by doing so, making sure that another young Black male grows up and follows the same circuitous path to the prison yard due to lack of leadership in the home. Now why would people convene around Tookie? Sad to say, but he represents a rallying cry and a "leader" (and I put it in quotes because it's pretty sad that he's held as such considering his past)....think about it...in most minority cultures, there is no positive, vocal and widely seen leader. While I don't condone his past, I do advocate the change, growth and majority he has shown...as well as the strength he's shown in his final hours. Face it. You've stripped most minority groups of true leaders by placing valuable camera time on sports stars, rappers & entertainers, while neglecting, failing even, to promote the intellectual members of various minority groups. Where's the balance in that? Ask any kid who are the most important leaders in his race. Chances are, he'll refer to someone from many decades ago or give you whoever had his video on MTV/BET last or a clip on ESPN. Tsk tsk, America. Killing him serves as a far worse crime against humanity because it'd only leave so many young cats out there living wreckless instead of having a former leader who's respected vocally advocating against gangs and gang violence. No one on a national level is speaking to and truly reaching these groups and you take one of the last conduits to institute change? Sure he created a monster. But he cannot forever be directly held responsible for the murder and mayhem that ensued. If that's the case, if we're condemning folks for mistakes in judgement made in their youth, the majority of people around me and myself would be imprisoned currently and facing the same fate. And if he should be held responsible, then we should also be trying a few of our political leaders as well as rewriting the history books in a few aspects. Because the majority of gang leaders (Tookie, Hoover, Barksdale, etc) started their involvement in search of power and protecting the interests of their communities much as our current leader is "protecting" the interests of humanity and America. Think about it. America, if your stance is still that he should have been killed, then how do you feel about the current war in Iraq? Should our President & Cheney be held accountable since there's been evidence to prove that there were weapons of mass destruction and the whole Libby-CIA leak is showing that our leaders (Cheney & crew in particular) used the media and the tools available to slightly distort public opinion and support for a war that had no direct effect on our country as a whole? How many American soldiers have died again? I lost track after 2,100. So if he directly lead, say just throwin out a number, 100 people to a gang in a five year span but, in turn with his work in prison, led 1,000 more away from a gang...he still deserved death? Like Big Rube said, "...even Judas the betrayer became true in the end". His works as a result should count for something. In a prison system built to "rehabiliatate", here's a criminal who was reformed and you think he still deserves death? And if you want to go with the Old Testament argument and say, "an eye for an eye", what shall you say about another principle of the same book, one called repentance? ...so a life in prison isn't enough? In my opinion, life imprisonment is far greater torture than capital punishment easily. Die at once or have your spirit, mind and body decay over the years? Which one is worse? I think he would have been a more powerful and a much more valuable asset alive than sent to die. I won't say I advocate him being released but you have to see the power and influence he holds if kept alive. So, America, keep at it. Keep playing puppetmaster around the globe. Keep playing God in your judical dealings. And eventually, if you keep beating a man when he's down, he'll one day rise up and crush the hand that's been keeping him down. In the end, this generation...we're the hate that hate made us. P.S. Could you please explain to me, America, why Charles Manson is still alive? I would like to know why Gary Ridgeway ("Green River Killer," Washington state)gets life in prison after killing close to fifty women and Tookie gets the death penalty..in a state that rarely uses the death penalty? I'm having a real hard time understanding it much less explaining it to my kid and the other youths I encounter on a daily basis. Oh yeah...send my little cousin home & don't do him like Tookie. His momma, his kids, and his big cousin need him. Thanks in advance.

God Made Me Funky

I really don't know shit about go-go music. I mean, no more than the basics...the bands, the originators, some of the history and certain songs. So I had to do some referencing to make a clear and readable post... From The History Of Go-Go" (Chuck)Brown explains that he came up with a new playing style – later tagged Go-Go – purely out of necessity. "Disco DJ’s started taking our shows," he points out. "They were cheaper and because of mixing they could keep the dance floor packed. People no longer liked the pause in between songs." In response, "the Godfather" started experimenting with a style that enabled his band to continue into the next song without ever stopping. He let the percussion section – drums and congas – take over, while he talked to the crowd. The call and response lyrics, and percussion work that developed became the benchmark of Go-Go. Keep in mind that the extended groove was already the cornerstone of 70’s funk and soul. Isaac Hayes, Curtis Mayfield, War, and George Clinton, among others, started taking their grooves out to 10 and sometimes 15 minutes. Chuck Brown took it even further. He joined different grooves into one continuous set that lasted as long as two hours. The crowd response was overwhelming. Almost over night young bands throughout the city studied the new style. They imitated it, added their own spin, and a new music began to take form. They called it Go-Go, a term that, at the time, simply meant a party. Remember Smokey Robinson’s hit "Going to a Go-Go?" From Wikipedia Go-go is defined by continuous, complex, heavy rhythm arrangements focused through two motifs performed on multiple congas, tumbadoras, and rototoms, interspersed with timbale and cowbell parts, driven by heavy-footed drumming and punctuated by crowd call-and-response. A swing rhythm is often implied (if not explicitly stated). Many of these bands still perform today, along with successive generations of bands. Go-Go is always performed lives in nightclubs, neighborhood parties, and sometimes with famous singers. Most Go-Go was recorded on tape and given out for free back in the day, now a days it is recorded on CD and sold to thousands in the DC/MD/VA area. Go-Go is one of the most unique musics in america today to african americans that only the DC/MD area knows. From a friend who's a DC head...(black Nikes, grey New Balances & homegrown clothing brands...DC is on it's own nuts and got it's own style...fully respect that). Go-go music is exclusive to DC. If you're not from DC then you might have heard of it but don't know exactly what it is. It's played with mostly percussion instruments--drums, congo drums, cow bell, tamborine, some guitar/bass, some piano/keyboard. There is no specific dance that you do to go-go music. It's sorta like when you hear the music you just go for it. You can dance alone or with a partner. Whatever goes. When I was coming up there were a few clubs that were exclusively go-go clubs but mostly bands traveled to different clubs and played on different nights. When I was in high school it was (of course Friday & Saturday) but other big club nights were Sundays and Tuesdays. You went with friends and you got there early (10:30pm) so you only had to pay $5 or if you got there early enough ladies were let in free. But the band didn't start playing until about 12:30am or 1. By then the place is packed with people and the music starts and you just start to dance until the band stops playing (about 4 maybe 5am). I don't know the method or logic to what songs bands decide to cover. They seem to do whatever is popular at the time. But I'm sure they take into account the beat and all that other stuff...how it would sound with a go-go beat. Go-go is sort of call and response between the band and the audience. That's probably one of the most fun parts of going to the go-go. The beats are real heavy and rhythmic. Now, after that long ass history lesson, what the hell does all that mean? 1. The majority of us have heard "Da Butt" and had no idea it was classified as go-go. Go-go is to DC what house is to Chi/Detroit, crunk is to Atlanta, buck is to Memphis, second lines are to the NO...strong regionally but not widely accepted or even heard of outside of those regions. But... 2. It's funky. You HAVE to move when you hear it. It's music that will force you as a audience member or listener to participate. 3. All I know is, Rare Essence took this cornball song that we all know the lyrics to by osmosis, and made it so soulful that I've been singin it the past four days without being able to help and not really giving a fuck either. Inhale. Exhale.

Rule #1 of these mixtapes - Get your own fuckin tracklisting or download it and see. We choose not to waste page space posting all the tracklistings. Rule #2 - Get'em while they're up. Once the bandwith starts getting flooded, the servers pull the file. Which leads us to....Rule #3- Reup if somebody asks and you have it. Don't wait for us because we might not have it anymore. We been lunchin on our mixtape game so we figured we feed you a little bit. So we decided to get back on our grizzly and part of what gave us a foot in the game. Real talk though, mixtapes been slackin. Nobody's really puttin out any major heat except a few minor brush fires here and there. "I'm Well Known In The Hood..."

"...Like the dopeman phone number Roll anything I can throw some 24's under Nigga talk bad 'bout the man But I sho' wonder Why the dope boys fuck with 'em And the hoes love 'em..." We find it hard to bring you new groundbreaking material somedays. So sometimes, we have to go back and check the appeal of some of the old stuff we once listened to. Personally, T.I.'s been getting alot of burn in the whip, especially this disc. It's thorough. Now, down here on this side, we was rockin T.I. when he was still T.I.P. and I'm Serious so don't get it twisted. But real is real, dude has shown more growth than any other artist that comes to mind. I've heard bitches say TIP's appeal is his swagger, his scrapes and brushes with the law and his thug posturing. I guess it's the same for dudes because I see it the same way. He pops that thug shit, and even though you know he's a little dude, you get the vibe that he means it. The little jail stints only give a little more weight to his claims, no pun intended. And, TI's got a lyrical cockiness that won't put him near the "greatest" but he flows in and out with the beat so fluidly. His voice is just another layer to the track. And his words are normally on some smooth shit when spittin to the ladies (go back & listen to "Let's Get Away"), heartfelt when speaking on his past or rocky present ("I Still Love You"), and accurate when he speaks on his city and the game (see: "Look What I Got"...& let us not forget he's the one who brought us the word "trap" on a major level). T.I. - Trap Muzik Still one of the best discs that dropped over this past year. The Memphis boys keep finding new ways to freak their sound and bring new artists to the table. Frayser Boy - Me Being Me And this one takes a nigga back to the mid 90's. Walkman on with the big ass ear muff headphones. Zoned out walkin with a mean mug. "...Last week fucked around and got a triple double Freaking brothers everyway like m.j. I can’t believe, today was a good day" Cube Well... Irv Gotti beat trial Pimp C almost free Hova's birthday. (If he decides to drop another album, shouldn't he qualify as LL status as another dude who's continously dropped record selling albums as he's gotten older?) ...so it looks like it's a grand old day for the hip-hop world. Some new singles we compiled for you, all in one file. Scarface - "Never Snitch" Nas - "Two Seater" Game - "All I Need" T.I. & Ciara - "King & Queen" Jagged Edge feat. John Legend - "Season's Change" LL Cool J & Juelz Santana - "It's LL & Santana" GLC - "Chi State Of Mind" Red Boss - "C Im From Tennessee" Mary J. Blige - "Be Without You" Anthony Hamilton - "Some Kind Of Wonderful" Unos Fuck Dipset Fuck the whole "this is a movement" movement. This joint right here...this is when Cam used to really rap and spit like he meant to really impress instead of playing with it. Camron - S.D.E Mike. Underrated. One slept on album. Dare to say the best mixtape this year. Repost but we're on the bandwagon early for this dude's next album. Killer Mike - Monster Killer Mike - DJ Sense Presents The Killer Mixtape Now I haven't listened to this yet, but I assure you...Chino is a monster. He's lyrical and witty and all that but not extremely wack like Canibus lol. An "underground" rapper who may never blow but is still worth every spin. Chino XL - Poison Pen: The Lost Tapes - 2005 PW is most More of the Xmas spirit that we promised you. Destiny's Child - 8 Days of Christmas Luther Vandross - This is Christmas DISCOUNTS!!! "Smart Dumb Aggins..."

Why the picture? Paradox. Plus the fact that Neilthe206King has been putting me on to some nice Ricky Powell photos. This one..."Sophisticated Bums" Spizzy put me on to this one album though. And it's been stuck ever since. A beautiful fusion of funk with jazz ideals and instrumentation. But don't those two genres sorta clash? Jazz = Cool, laidback. Funk = In your face, brash, loud. Melodic. Harsh and cutting at times. Isn't that a paradox of some sort? Either way, this some of the illest sounds ever created by music. Herbie Hancock - Headhunters I'm not the biggest Christmas freak but I do enjoy the holidays....food, family, good times, gift giving, shopping, spreading love, blase blase blah. And since we're reppin the tastes of a music loving public, we figured it was only right that we dropped a few holiday inspired joints for you. And while I'm not a huge fan of Christmas albums, I can remember this being one of those I sorta snuck around and listened to when it first dropped lol. Boyz II Men - Christmas Interpretations And we'll try to up a few more. Consider this the first of the batch. Mariah Carey - Merry Christmas Nat King Cole - Merry Christmas You know how churches put up those "Reason For The Season" signs right about now? We're not gonna do that. But one of my lil homies did write something that sorta gave me "whoa...true that. that's real talk right there" type feelings after I read it. Since I've been dying to find a context relevant enough to post it, here you go. Give it a read. This is about realtionships. Do you have a good dating relatioship? Is it a good relationship if y'all don't talk on the phone, is it a relationship if y'all never spend time with each other. Ladies is it a relationship if when he is with his friends and sees you he ignores you. Is it a relationship if every time your birthday comes along he doesnt get you anything. Fellas is it a relationship if you see her cheating on you with someone else.Of course all the answers to these questions are no. Yet why do so many Christians think they have a relationship with God, yet we cheat on Him with the devil, and the world, and deny Him in front of our friends, we never spend time with Him, and we never give Him a dime. This is just a small example how we neglect God. I'm not religious but am spiritual so after I read that, I did go give someone needy a dollar lol. Fuck it yo, we're giving all the time around these parts sharing music so God gotta know my heart means well lol. But here's a little more holiday cheer we're gonna spread your way.
