Rapper sentenced to 20 years for drug trafficking, shooting police
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) Friday, May 4, 2001 -- A local rapper serving eight years for shooting two police officers has been sentenced to 20 more years for distribution of cocaine and crack cocaine.
Steven Greenwade, 27, pleaded guilty last August and was sentenced April 26 by U.S. District Judge John Nixon.
Greenwade was responsible for distributing at least 150 to 500 grams of crack cocaine between 1994 and 1998, authorities said. Greenwade converted the cocaine to crack cocaine before distribution, authorities said.
Greenwade obtained the cocaine from co-conspirator Thomas P. Young, who was convicted and sentenced to 15 years in prison.
Profits from the drug sales were invested in his music business, Greenwade Records, authorities said.
The officers were shot when they tried to serve a warrant at the drug house used by Greenwade and Young. Greenwade used a handgun to shoot one officer in the leg, and the other in the chest. That officer was wearing a bulletproof vest, and neither was seriously injured.
